Description

The outer fly attaches to the inner sheet with clips adjacent to the pole fixings. A couple of Velcro patches allow for accurate positioning over the inner. This may be a potential weak point in sustained high winds and heavy rain, but it is double taped, and assuming everything else is battened down I doubt it will be a problem. The Cairngorm features an incredibly simple and reliable construction with just one pole running over the centre of the tent and another at either end. Despite many tents with this design scrimping on space, the Cairngorm features plenty of internal height and width, allowing you to safely cook, get changed or map read inside. The zips are securely sewn in and have sensible pull loops so they can be easily used even if you have gloved or cold hands. My only gripe would be the baffle as it does get caught in the zip if you’re too hasty to get in or out. If Vango had made it just a bit deeper/stiffer this could have been avoided. When pitched on a flat surface the Helix is easy to trim and tighten down. The Line Lok® guy tensioners work well and hold fast, although I did find them a bit annoying to work at first.

The groundsheet is made from an even more durable 70D polyester and creates a fully waterproof, durable barrier against boggy, rough ground. Finally, the inner is made from a breathable polyester which reduces the amount of condensation build up. Also the spitfires fly does not come that close to ground for ventilation but is no problem when iot rains. In conclusion, there are lighter and much pricier two-man tent options are out there, but the Vango Helix 200 is a great compromise and at a really good price.I also have a Pro Action i man tent also known as tiger paws which is similar slightly heavyer at 1.9 kgs and a bit bigger with a mini porch too. Discontinued. Over the years, I’ve pitched hundreds of tents and it’s the speed at which you can make your home for the night that is the most important. I liked that the Helix 200 was a straightforward tent to put up and easy to trim and tighten down. The sit up height which is a boon if your a six footer and then some means you can dress easily in the tent without your head hitting the tent and the insides dont touch your head and feet when sleeping. Only problem for me would be the inability to get in one and see how it felt before buying, I wouldn't buy a tent without doing that. I would recomend the tent happily, you will see bigger tents at over 3 kgs and smaller tents which ressemble a bivvy with a twig.

Like most small tunnel tent designs, a single peg in the ground is enough to keep everything where you need it while you get the poles in place. The pegs are lightweight aluminium/alloy and have a blunt point, which I find is better for finding a route through stony ground – and also prevents you poking a hole in your tent.An additional Footprint can also be pitched first to help prevent the underside of your tent getting dirty and provide protection from small tears and holes. The short fly is a feature on many American tents, European tents do tend to be designed with bad weather protection as a higher priority than ventilation. I’ve also pitched the Vango Helix 200 in different condition, in calm weather and in a fairly strong wind, and other than making sure nothing important blew off the top of Goat Fell, it really only takes a couple of minutes to set up and secure.

When your poles are safely removed from the sleeve, collapse them from the centre to avoid stretching the elastic. The thing about the Eureka is that its long end to end and despite the one man tent desciption you can stow all your gear top bottom and each side of your bag. The flysheet is made from Vango's own Protex RS polyester fabric, a lightweight, tough, fully waterproof fabric with the highest hydrostatic head rating in Vango's range, 5000mm. Every seam is fully taped, and a ripstop weave ensures durability if you happen to catch the fabric on a branch, bramble or zip. The benefit of the polyester content in Proflex is that unlike nylon which will degrade when left in harsh sunlight for extended periods of time, Polyester will resist it for far longer. This allows it to be used on longer trips without as much concern for UV degradation. The ProTex RS is a lightweight and extra strong outer that will protect you from the harshest outdoor environment. It features the highest waterproofing, strong polyester fabric, a ripstop weave, and it even meets ISO5912 fire retardant standards. There are lighter and stronger pegs out there, and if weight matters, you might just save a few grams, but you will pay extra for these. Otherwise, those supplied do the job well.
