I am basically a nightmare to date insofar as I’m a terrific girlfriend – extremely good fun, considerate and curious about the other party, tolerant and flexible – but will also do whatever I want at all times. I lure the person in with my excellent girlfriendness and then announce I am going to be abroad for eight of the following 12 months, or can only see them once a month while I finish this project, or whatever other absurd condition has arisen that makes it functionally impossible to have a relationship. (There’s definitely an unattractive part of me that revels in this habit of mine because it is so at odds with the desperation and need for romantic love that characterised my 20s.)

We Are Writers is a brilliant way to inspire children to write and offers them a unique opportunity to see their own writing, published in a real book. It is an incredible way to enthuse and excite any child about writing – and it costs absolutely nothing for the school to take part! We then looked at the figurative language in the book. We looked for personification, similes, metaphors, alliteration and onomatopoeia. We also shared examples on the board together. We looked for examples of nationalities, imperatives and words related to unity or equality.

We are especially looking for distinctive voices - and scripts that express those voices. We do not look for more of the same – we look for the writer’s ability to pull an audience into a world and hold them in it. It’s not necessarily about finding precincts or situations that have ‘never been done before’ but having an original take on stories that have the potential to have wide breadth of appeal. We will not accept late submissions under any circumstances. Writers have four full weeks to submit an entry, giving plenty of time to navigate the E-submissions system and meet the deadline.
