The Royal Mint's definitely looking to the past for inspiration at the moment and the British Monarchs collection, launched in 2022, is a testament to this. The coins in this range celebrate some of the remarkable Kings and Queens that have graced British money down the centuries. 21 coins are planned but we can expect four to be released in 2023: Disembarking at Tilbury in Essex on 22 June 1948, many of the passengers onboard HMT Empire Windrush arrived in the United Kingdom hoping for a new life. Playing a pivotal role in rebuilding the country in the wake of the Second World War, the ship’s passengers, and the subsequent generations it has come to represent, have left an indelible mark on British society and culture. The same Proclamation indicates that these will be accompanied by new Royal Arms bullion coins as well as new additions to the Gold Standard range in 1/10oz, 1/4oz, 1/2oz and 1oz sizes. Share Your Thoughts In recognition of the sacrifices and contributions made by the Windrush Generation, the Royal Mint has issued a special set of 50p coins to mark the 72nd anniversary of the arrival of the Empire Windrush in the UK. The coins feature a range of designs, ranging from depictions of the iconic ship itself to images of families reuniting and musicians and dancers performing at carnival. New commemorative 2023 UK Annual Sets dropped in January. These eagerly anticipated coin sets feature the five key collectable coins of 2023. I am a writer and visual artist, and my work is informed and inspired by our experiences of migration. I understand the complex motivations that prompted so many young men and women to take the life-changing decision to come and make Britain their home. A 16 December 2022 Proclamation teases a new investment collection themed around the so-called 'Special Relationship' between the United Kingdom and the United States. The phrase comes from a 1946 speech by British Prime Minister Winston Churchill who features on these 1/4oz gold and 1oz silver bullion coins alongside President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The inscription will read 'UNITED STATES – UNITED KINGDOM A SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP' along with the date and composition. The concept was originally scheduled for a 2021 release and appears to have been revived. Annual Sets from The Royal Mint are the first to feature coins with a portrait of King Charles III. 2022 sets were the last to be issued in the reign of Queen Elizabeth II and those sets contained coins with Jody Clark's portrait of Her Majesty. Despite this, members of the Windrush Generation have faced numerous challenges in the decades since their arrival. In particular, the Home Office’s 2012 decision to introduce stricter immigration rules led to the wrongful detention, deportation, and denial of citizenship to many individuals who had lived in the UK for decades.
