Description

The Philips 807 makes for an excellent gaming TV thanks to its support for 4K/120Hz high frame rate, ALLM and VRR – including Nvidia G-Sync and AMD FreeSync Premium – although, as mentioned earlier, there are only two HDMI 2.1 inputs. The OLED807 has a razor thin, zero bezel design with an outside metal frame that allows a seamless connection to the new and improved four-sided Ambilight system, with increased colour detail and accuracy, to create the most immersive viewing experience.

The ratio between the horizontal and the vertical side of the display. Some of the standard and widely used aspect ratios are 4:3, 5:4, 16:9 and 16:10. This television contains lead only in certain parts or components where no technology alternatives exist in accordance with existing exemption clauses under the RoHS Directive. With the OLED807, though, the innate attraction of OLED technology is taken up a gear by its shift to new so-called EX OLED panels. By switching to deuterium in the EX panels’ organic light-emitting diodes, OLED display manufacturer LG Display claims to achieve 30 per cent more brightness than is possible with conventional OLED displays. Or around 10 per cent more brightness than was possible with the so-called Evo panels introduced in 2021. The operating humidity shows the acceptable level of humidity, in which the display will function flawlessly. It sets a lower and an upper humidity level for safe operation and is measured in percentage. Crucially, outside of the spectacular but occasionally forced-looking Crystal Clear preset, there’s nothing gaudy or forced about the OLED807’s new brightness and colour achievements. The P5 processor deploys the extra capabilities of the new EX display with enough finesse and experience to ensure that it delivers nothing but positive outcomes. Improvements to the 6th Gen P5 AI processing include adding more ‘intelligence’ to the incorporation of the TV’s light sensor in the sets AI functionality.

If Philips' flagship OLED turns out to be out of your budget, this high-end MiniLED TV could be a tempting trade-off between performance and price. Information about the maximum horizontal viewing angle, within which the image on the screen is of acceptable quality. Based on our testing it boasts all of the stellar features of the 65-inch model C2 and newer C3, but it comes with a larger 77-inch screen. In fact, the only reason we don’t list it as the best overall is that, based on our experience, 77 inches is a little too large for most living rooms and it’s notably more expensive than its 65-inch siblings. And gaming has gotten a boost too. Not only is 4K 120Hz support with VRR now possible over the two HDMI 2.1 ports (with two more HDMI 2.0 ports available), but there's a new Game Bar that makes it easy to change settings depending on the type of game you're playing. This means you can optimise for low latency (which Philips says can be as little as 9ms), image fidelity or make sure settings such as the AMD FreeSync and Nvidia G-Sync support are enabled and working. LG's C-series OLED TVs are always the company's most popular, and the 42-inch C3 is the baby of the 2023 range. It's got a slightly less bright panel than the larger C3 models and it doesn't feature MLA or QD-OLED tech (which hasn't yet made it down to this sort of size), but it does boast the same exceptional feature set as well as the best overall picture quality available at this size. It's cheaper than its rivals, too.The extra brightness of the EX panel doesn’t just boost the TV’s contrast and sense of HDR ‘punch’, either. Expertly marshalled by the P5 processor, it also injects even more life into Philips’ already luxuriously rich and vibrant colour palette. Bold, heavily saturated tones look explosively intense, yet such is Philips’ mastery of its colour management that apart from one or two rare over-the-top moments with the new Crystal Clear preset, the colour intensity is always matched by excellent tonal subtlety and definition. As a result, even the most richly coloured objects don’t look flattened or forced. The operating altitude shows the maximum admissible altitude, at which the display will function flawlessly. Above this level it might not operate properly and/or might seize to function.

The 807 range consists of four models with 48in, 55in, 65in and 77in screen sizes available. The design is elegant and the build quality is impressive for the money, but only two of the four HDMI inputs support all the features found on the latest gaming consoles. However, please note that the 48-inch OLED807 won't be able to match the same highs as this, because the panel can't get as bright at this size (it's the same for all 48-inch OLEDs) – this brightness applies to the 55-inch, 65-inch and 77-inch models. And there's Ambilight. This unique-to-Philips technology spreads light that matches what's on-screen across the walls, making the TV feel even bigger, and helping with eye comfort and atmosphere. We'll talk more about it later, but it really is a compelling addition.

There are various panel technologies. Each has its own specific features - viewing angles, color reproduction, response time, brightness/contrast, production cost, etc. The image quality depends directly on the type of the display panel used. To be clear, broadly speaking we don't recommend that you invest in an 8K TV at the moment. There's practically no 8K content that's worth watching – and none even confirmed as being on the way. But, if you want to use 8K and OLED in the same sentence when describing your TV to friends, the LG OLED77Z2 is the set to get. Featuring a giant 77-inch OLED screen, the Z2 is the only 8K OLED TV we’ve tested – Samsung’s competing QE75QN900B uses a Mini LED panel instead.

OLED807 can act as a dedicated centre channel speaker while DTS-Play-Fi technology allows easy wireless AV system building. The percentage of the approximate area, taken by the active part of the screen, to the total front area. It offers strong HDR support (HDR10, HDR10+, HLG, Dolby Vision) but gaming features seem to have taken a hit. HDMI 2.1 is present but there's no eARC or Auto Low Latency Mode. What's more, resolution maxes out at 4K@60Hz so games won't run as smoothly as they might (if played at 4K@120Hz).

The extra contrast afforded by the brighter highlights helps to reinforce edges and textures, giving everything an even more solid and three-dimensional appearance, yet this is also masterfully combined with an even greater degree of subtlety. The lights shining on a tiled wall reveal all sorts of subtle shades on the A95L, and as Peter peers into a bottle in Mother Barnabus's office, the little ship inside is resolved with fabulous fine detail and excellent solidity.
