Description

For further information on using the Ableton software, please view the following tutorial videos: Ableton | Learn Live This article refers to “ASIO” and “non-ASIO” (sometimes referred to as “WDM”) driver types. For more information about these terms, please see this article. In the window that opens, you can then select any additional channels that you wish to expose to non-ASIO applications ( in the example below we'll expose Analogue Inputs 3 + 4):

If you have set a buffer size of 512 samples. The amount of time (milliseconds) 512 samples equates to, depends on how long it takes for 512 samples to be processed. Equivalent Input Noise (EIN) < -120dB: measured at 55dB of gain with 150Ω termination (20Hz/22kHz bandpass filter)Please note that if you're using an application that includes ASIO support (e.g. Pro Tools, Ableton Live, Cubase, Studio One, Reaper etc) then all input and output channels will be available to you by default, this article may not be applicable. Looking only at the cost itself, the 2i2 is a decent amount of money LESS than the 2i4. If the price point is the only factor that concerns you, then you might as well get the 2i2. If you set your buffer size in milliseconds and not samples, then you are controlling the overall latency in time, The buffer is adjusted for each sample rate so that you always get the latency that you have set in milliseconds. The latency that you set using your buffer size (and sample rate) is not the latency that impacts the sound by the time it reaches your ears. Other sources of latency include: If these things matter to you, then the 2i4 is the one to get despite the price increase. If not, then the 2i2 is the more affordable way to go.

The Scarlett 2i2 and 2i4 are both manufactured by Focusrite, an English company that specialize in producing top-quality audio recording equipment. The Saffire 6 USB 1.1 requires a driver on both Mac and Windows systems, but it is no longer supported. Please see this article for more information. Buying either of these Focusrite Scarlett models also give you access to the same bundle of plug-ins and software. The 4th gen Scarletts include technical improvements across all interfaces with 120dB dynamic range RedNet A/D converters, a new improved headphone amp, better implementation of knob halo indicators with output metering for the 2i2 and 4i4, and a reworked Air mode. The 2i2 is lighter and more portable, but compared to the 2i4, it may not enough to make a huge difference. Inputs/Outputs (I/O)

Both versions of the Scarlet are pretty close in size. But the 2i4 is a bit bigger and heavier because it comes with more hardware. When using Direct Monitor you hear the audio from your recording source before it is passed to the computer, again without input latency in the same way as above - you will however still hear audio passed from the computer regardless. The 2i4 weighs a little over half a pound more and is slightly bulkier. This is the major trade-off that comes with having more features. Besides microphones, there is other equipment that may use 48V Phantom Power. These devices will often state '48V' on them if they need this, it will also be in the user guide for the equipment you are using. But be warned of phantom power. Just make sure to plug your laptop into an external power source while using these audio interfaces.
