Description

Modeled after a flask that was lost on a French battlefield more than four centuries ago, each crystal decanter of LOUIS XIII is hand-blown, numbered and decorated with fleurs-de-lis, requiring the work of eleven exceptional craftsmen.

The grapes that are used to make the foundational wine are harvested between the end of September and early part of October. They create a white wine that is dry and acidic with no extra sugars required, which helps to produce a wonderfully pure eux-de-vie. Tesseron Extreme Cognac is velvety and supple on the palate, a sensory experience that is testament to its aging process and high quality. This is a very particular old Cognac, it is not a "constructed" super-blend but an authentic testimonial, a time capsule of truely très vieuxCognac. However, as times change, new attitudes are forged, and the quest for original experiences continues. And like in 1874 when Paul-Emile Rémy Martin had the grand idea to “think a century ahead” by presenting a blend of the finest Grande Champagne eaux-de-vie in an ornate decanter decorated with the fleur-de-lys, so the Louis XIII legacy moves forward in 2022 with the latest and possibly most exciting expression to emerge: The Drop. MVO: It’s always a tough call to top a legend. In fact, it’s impossible. I have to say that all the aforementioned Cognacs are serious contenders. Louis XIII Cognac takes this even further, with individual elements maturing in ancient oak barrels for up to 100 years or until they’re deemed ready to take their place in the sacred blend of Louis XIII. In addition, every eau-de-vie hails from the Grande Champagne premier cru. The result is a taste and aroma profile that is virtually one of a kind.

My Account

Of some 1,000 samples that are submitted for the Cellar Master’s approval, barely a dozen will be selected for this special destiny. A younger brother, Philippe, followed two years later. When his father died on May 14, 1643, 4-year-old Louis inherited the crown of a fractured, unstable and nearly insolvent France. The juice is then left to ferment naturally for one to two weeks. Low initial alcohol content is considered an advantage, as the aromas of the cognac will be richer.

By definition, Cognac is a type of brandy made from wine that is distilled and then barrel-aged. To qualify as Cognac, the brandy has to be made according to specific guidelines and with grapes from the Cognac region, a sub-prefecture in southwestern France. The House of Tesseron’s contender for Louis XIII’s crown is Tesseron Extreme. This Cognac experience is made from a Grande Champagne blend of 10 rare eaux-de-vie. that dates from 1853 to 1906, but the house keeps the exact composition a closely guarded secret. The childhood of Louis XIV was at an end, but no one believed him capable of seizing the reins of power. No one suspected his thoughts. He wrote in his Mémoires: Yes, it is. Martell may be popular as cognac but it is also categorised as brandy wine. But Martell was popular as a big producer of cognac. Most of their alcohol is made in the cognac region of France. Cognac can be made only from the cognac region which they have 6 regions while brandy can be made anywhere, that's what makes them different from each other. What kind of liquor is Martell? Paul-Emile broke from tradition and began bottling his cognacs rather than continuing to sell them by the barrel. In 1874, he began selling a blend of his best 100% Grande Champagne cognacs in an ornate decanter. While originally designated "Grande Champagne Very Old – Age Unknown", this particular blend and its decanter later became known as Louis XIII. [3] Production [ edit ]The following year, 22-year-old Louis married his first cousin Marie-Thérèse, daughter of King Philip IV of Spain. A diplomatic necessity more than anything else, the union produced six children, of whom only one, Louis, survived to adulthood. (A number of illegitimate offspring resulted from Louis XIV’s affairs with a string of official and unofficial mistresses.) Sun King Roughly one million Huguenots lived in France at the time, and many were merchants, artisans or other types of skilled workers. Although emigration of Protestants was explicitly forbidden by the Edict of Fontainebleau, thousands of people—estimates range from 200,000 to 800,000—fled in the decades that followed, settling in England, Switzerland, Germany and the American colonies, among other places.

The origins of Louis XIII cognac begin with the founding of the House in the Cognac region in the early 1700s. In 1841, after more than a century of producing cognac, Paul-Emile Rémy Martin assumed control of the business and began selling the House’s cognacs under the family name. [3] For decades, a bottle of Louis XIII has represented the pinnacle of refinement, rarity, and master craftsmanship. It's described as the king of Cognacs, and its history is a mix of legend, artistry, and achievement.Cognac is categorized by age statement. VS Cognac, or Very Special, ages for two years. VSOP, or Very Special Old Pale, ages for at least four years. Napoleon Cognac requires six years of aging, and XO, or Extra Old Cognac, ages for 10 years.

So, there you have it—the bar that each of our contenders has to equal to be considered a potential alternative for the famous Louis XIII. Finally, to create the traditional LOUIS XIII Cognac, over 1,200 different types of Grand Champagne eaux de vie are blended together, with the youngest eau de vie being 40 years old and the oldest being over 100 years old. Given this astounding aging process, each bottle of LOUIS XIII has been stewarded by at least three generations of cellar masters from Rémy Martin. This Cognac is the epitome of Hors d’Age—a term that translates literally as, beyond age or ageless. Such eau-de-vie will have aged far beyond what the spirits in an XO or XXO are aged. Indeed, it takes 30, 40, 50 years or more of aging to enter this hallowed category. The age of the blend is very important as well. The longer an eau-de-vie is aged in an oak barrel, the more it takes on the aromas of the wood. It also depends on the age of the barrel itself. When the oak is young, it give off stronger notes of wood than it would if it were used for years. He also thinks they make great Sazeracs or Old Fashioneds, bringing “woodsy aromas from the barrel,” he says. You may be wondering, “What’s the difference between cognac and brandy? Aren’t they the same thing?” You’re partially correct. Cognac is a type of brandy, but is named after the specific region of France where it’s produced. Only brandy made in the town of Cognac can be called cognac, similar to how whiskey made in Scotland is called scotch. How is Rémy Martin cognac made? The Cellar Master will inspect and sample each cask every year, judging evolution with an expert nose and selecting certain casks to be blended with certain others.
