I’m not sure how detectable it is in the assembly’s video, but I ran into two problems immediately in the BIOS and then on the next boot.

I execute each of my four different tests (described above) individually in IOMeter against the drive mapped above. HDD: raidz1 - 3x HGST Ultrastar 7K6000 SAS 6TB *or* Seagate Ironwolf Pro 6TB *or* WD Red Pro 6TB -- I can't really decide between them, although I'm leaving towards the HGST's due to their better reliability numbers, but 5 year warranty is the primary goal.Thoughts? We also like the removable dust filter in front of the two cooling fans, this greatly aids in keeping inside the case dust free and allows for removal and cleaning.

As we can see by the above pictures there are ample cooling vents along the sides and top of the case. Here are the key specs: SilverStone CS280 Specifications But for a Network Attached Storage, you want your cooling to be focused on your drives, especially if they’re HDDs. This is a small letdown. Be aware that premature failure is possible if you don’t get your thermals right. More often than not, the bulk of your storage will be 3.5″ hard drives spinning away. Be sure to look at hard drive specifications for NAS usage – Seagate Ironwolf and WD Reds are standard choices. And of course, the newer, weaker CPU would have a harder time running multiple VMs while doing NAS duties, so it's not quite an apples-to-apples comparison.

Should you desire a little more horsepower for 4k transcoding, emulation, or the occasional gaming session, this is no longer a possibility. There are hot-swap variations of this case available if you wanted that. Otherwise, the L4500 fits up to fifteen 3.5″ drives, which should be more than enough for any home user. You could even try buying multiple cases in the unlikely scenario you run out of drive bays. A feature that some NAS cases have is hot-swapping. The term means that you can take out and reinstall your drives, while the system itself is running. Again, whether this feature will appeal to you depends on your usage. If you need your home server up 24×7, then this may be an excellent thing to have.

Ultimately, space is what mattered the most in this blog, and I think that I’ve been unquestioningly successful in that regard. The amount of space that the DIY NAS: 2019 Edition takes up (11.8 liters) is nearly half of what the prior year’s NAS used up (21.6 liters). It’s been quite a few years since I built my NAS, but given what I know of my data-storage habits today, I probably would have been quite comfortable to trade a bit of storage capacity to build an even smaller NAS. But Brian, your conclusion is WRONG!

Because the SG05 supports a GPU in this same exact position, the case has the “extra room” for the card to run (both vertically and horizontally). Unfortunately, this is just wasted space in the CS280. Had they not reused the SG05 chassis, this case should have been made much smaller. While the case advertises that it supports a card up to 8.66″ (220mm) in length, it also needs to sit lower than 2.39″ (60.75mm) to slip under the bay.Such compact cases with little space “behind” the PSU are a prime example of the one disadvantage modular PSUs have in such space-constrainted situations: A need for additional space for those plugs there. The brushed aluminum front with the silk screened logo looks fantastic. The brushing is very smooth and the logo is extremely crisp. For the power supply, I wound up choosing the SilverStone ST45SF-V3 ( specs). The 450-watt, 80 PLUS Bronze certified power supply was going to be more than enough to meet the needs of the power-sipping CPU and 8 hard disk drives. We would advise against a water-cooled build. Your rig should never be pushing out really high-temperatures unless something is wrong. Water cooling will also be more complex and involved, for no apparently useful reason. Most NAS servers are not built for aesthetics, so the advantages of water cooling are overlooked.
