You can change the grass as often as you need, this will largely depend on how often your puppy uses it but expect your grass to last for a minimum of 2 weeks. Remember the grass is greener where you water it!

If you’re here looking for build instructions then you probably don’t need a lot of convincing on why an indoor potty or grass box is so beneficial.Or, some people put down a biodegradable option such as newspaper or biodegradable landscaping fabric, or a burlap liner. Is Your Dog Still Peeing & Pooping On Your Lawn Or Grassed Area Even Though You’ve Made A Designated Dog Potty Area For Them? A faux grass dog potty will usually be very similar in design to the tray described above, but will also feature a layer of artificial grass on top, for aesthetic reasons and to try to entice your pup by recreating their natural, outdoor toilet. The grass will be permeable, allowing the pee to soak through and collect in the tray or container below. To clean, simply wash with soap and water. This will keep the pad smelling fresh. Some of our testers mentioned that they had to wash it daily to reduce odours but this depends on where you place the pee pad. If it is outdoors, like on an apartment balcony, you could probably get away with washing it less often, whereas if placed indoors it will probably need more upkeep. Before we get into how to create a potty area in your yard, it’s always fun and useful to see what other people have done. Here we have a few projects that include dedicated dog potty areas and dog run ideas too. Custom Dog Run

As a very crude rule of thumb, the larger your dog, the more frequently you’ll need replacements. This is because larger dogs hold more urine and take larger dumps. If you have a puppy, you will also need a weekly replacement because they pee so much. Now comes the fun part. Grab your shovel and dig out a trench! Starting from the 4” to 1 ½” Reducer you will want to dig a trench that is about 12” wide and as long as the Doggy John area (mine is about 15 feet). Normally when digging drainage pipes you dig down about 16”; however, in this case you only have to dig as deep as the bottom part of the 4” to 1 ½” Reducer opening. If you dig much deeper than that then water will have to fill the bottom of the trench before it is able to flow out the pipe. Remember to use the level and ensure that your trench continues to drain away from the area at a rate of at least ½” for every four feet of length.Soil should be freshened up by being raked and turned, and then being levelled out and compacted. Some people choose to bring in new soil, or mix/blend in some new soil with the existing soil Hompet´s balcony pee pad for dogs uses high-grade and UV-resistant polyethylene and polypropylene artificial grass that is created to withstand dog pee as well as harsh sunlight without degrading. Use some duct tape to hold down your plastic sheet. You should also leave it long and wide; you will trim it at the end. In Australia, most vets recommend waiting until 2 weeks after puppy’s last vaccination – usually around 14-16 weeks of age – before taking them outside on the street, to parks and on walking trails and that time at home can feel like forever! If you live in an apartment and don’t have a garden but want to get your puppy used to peeing on real grass, you need a real grass dog toilet! Not to mention, a lot of these project ideas have drainage systems. How Much Does it Cost To Build One?

The 4-toned grass straws give your potty lawn a natural appearance for the dog’s ideal experience. Furthermore, cleaning this easy-to-clean dog pad with water and mild detergent is an easy method to restore it to almost-new condition. This balcony grass potty is very simple to maintain. For any owners still worried about the potential odor caused by a dog potty, the PetSafe Piddle Place Indoor/Outdoor Dog Potty is for you. This faux grass patch for dogs is pricier than some of the other options listed here, but it does include a 9 week supply of Bio+ treatment. This consists of a concentrate that you mix with water and place in the catchment reservoir of the Piddle Place before use, to help neutralize bad smells, as well as a spray which you can use to clean the artificial grass (the turf is also machine washable in cold water, so it’s super easy to keep clean!) A real grass dog potty consists of a patch of – yes, you guessed it – real grass, contained in a (usually) cardboard tray. A real grass dog potty will generally need to be replaced after a couple of weeks, but they are biodegradable, so are still the most environmentally-friendly option. You might have a regular time your dog goes potty – like for example when people let their dog outside in the morning or night. This might be a good time to do potty area training. If you follow some of the guides of any of these 7 best DIY dog toilet– you might end up with a permanent solution!A fabulous bonus is that real grass is of course biodegradable. A very eco-friendly option for your household. Colorful flowers and plants can effectively divert attention away from areas beyond them, while taller plants are great for concealing what’s there behind, creating a natural visual barrier. The top grass mat layer is made of synthetic plastic and the tray and insert are made of hard plastic. We have trained our Labradoodle puppy Max to do his business on a portable fake grass patch. I even installed a doggy door on our second story balcony so he can use the bathroom whenever he feels the urge.

These projects aren’t just for indoor use – you can put them outside for designated potty spots. Why you may ask? To protect the rest of your yard from pure destruction. At a minimum the size of the dog potty area should at least allow your dog to comfortably turn a few circles before doing their business. It’s important to consider that a smaller space can become smelly faster, potentially deterring your dog from using it. Bring treats out with you and feed your dog a treat and praise them if you see them go potty there. Pea gravel is a common choice – as long as it’s smooth enough for your dog to walk and do their business on, gravel tends to be good at drainage, doesn’t absorb odors and tends to look pretty good The filler is what your dog will go potty on, and is the material that sits on the top of the potty area. It’s what you see on the surface. Prices can vary from place to place, and how extensive your build is. Also, big dogs require a bigger space.
