Description

The new OLED and Mini LED sets take top billing for 2021, which has led to the QLED/ULED options shuffling down the line to make space, the A7G looking to offer HDR performance at an affordable price. Beyond streaming, there’s Google Assistant for voice control, recommendations, and searches, and the set also works with Alexa. You can access Google Assistant by pressing a button on the U8H’s remote control to activate its built-in mic and there are also dedictated buttons on the remote to directly call up various streaming services. With a pair of HDMI 2.1 ports and support for up to 4K 144Hz input, the U8K series is a great option for gaming. The Hisense also supports VRR, ALLM and FreeSync Premium Pro along with Dolby Vision gaming at 4K 144Hz. Google TV currently doesn’t offer a gaming option with native support, though you can find the Nvidia Geforce Now app in the Google Play store. LG is the best brand on average, which is true in many cases, but there are some stinkers in its huge lineup.

The Hisense U8K is feature-packed, delivers super-bright HDR and impressive audio, but is undercut on price by one key rival

We uploaded the initial brightness measurements and uniformity photos for the Accelerated Longevity Test. The U8K's pop-up Game Menu lets you adjust gaming-related settings on the fly. (Image credit: Future) Hisense U8K Series TV review: Gaming Google Assistant works well to command things like specific volume adjustments (Hey Google, reduce volume to 50%), content searches (show me 1980s horror films I can watch for free), and even input selection (switch to Blu-ray player input). And while Google is definitely pushing movies you can watch free (with ads, of course) on its own YouTube channel (these show up in a big window at the top of the TV interface), the general content recommendations seemed to sync up pretty well, revealing, for better or worse, a high level of familiarity. Otherwise, it has features you don't normally find on TVs at this price range. It has VRR support, although over the narrow 48-60Hz range. It doesn't support HDR10+ like the more expensive models, but it does have Dolby Vision, which is more widespread. It doesn't support advanced DTS audio formats, but it does support DTS 5.1 over ARC. It has good response time and superbly low input lag, so it's a decent gaming TV overall. Ultimately, this is the best cheap TV on the market, and it's almost as good as the more expensive U6K. Hisense TVs have all the tech they need to succeed, but top-tier features doesn't always add up to a top TV. A brand needs the know-how and skill to make the most of them. Display types

We bought and tested the Hisense U7H, and added a few comparisons in this review. See our full comparison between these two TVs here. Added mention of the newly reviewed TCL QM8/QM850G QLED to this review's Compared to Other TVs box.All picture and sound adjustments (aside from volume and mute) must be accessed from their repective setup menus. On the picture side, along with local dimming there are advanced settings to tweak gamma and white balance, as well as a full color management system, although those adjustments are best left to calibration professionals. Regular viewers interested in getting the best picture quality for movies would do well to start with Filmmaker mode, and any adjustments you make there can also be applied to the set’s other inputs.
