Description

The above uses and effects are consequences of the fact that the solution is a source of effectively free elemental iodine, which is readily generated from the equilibrium between elemental iodine molecules and polyiodide ions in the solution. Jean Francois Coindet (1774-1834) was the first to use iodine for medicinal use. Lugol’s Solution was first made by French physician J. G. A. Lugol in 1829. Dr. Lugol researched substances that could help treat infections and found that iodine could be used and showed promise in this field. What does Lugol's Iodine Solution do? Laboratory evaluation revealed leukocytosis to 15,500cells/μL and severe anemia with hemoglobin 4.5g/dL. Peripheral blood smear showed malaria infection. He was transfused with 1 unit of blood and given artemether/lumefantrine for malaria treatment. Electrolytes, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, liver function tests, and coagulation profile were normal. Abdominal ultrasound was normal. Right lower extremity Doppler ultrasound showed deep vein thrombosis. Enoxaparin was bridged to warfarin for anticoagulation. The patient also received acetaminophen for pain and Ranferon (iron, folic acid, ascorbic acid, vitamin B12, and zinc supplementation) for anemia. His leg swelling was treated with another course of itraconazole 200 mg once daily for 30 days starting on day +27. Biopsy on day +48 revealed a polymorphous population of lymphoid cells including granulomas, neutrophils, cellular debris, and stromal fragments. There was no atypia and acid-fast staining was unremarkable. Hyphal fragments were seen, which, together with his clinical findings, confirmed the diagnosis of subcutaneous phycomycosis. Other factors need to be considered that contribute to the strength of the solution. For example, how much is a “drop”? In providing the above information, we have decided to follow the standard metric description that 1 drop = 1/20 of 1ml. (You may be interested to know that we measured 15 vertical drops from the actual pipette as equal to 1ml). Plus, whether the drop is a vertical or horizontal drop also factors in to the quantity. When comparing the strength that is claimed on a bottle of Lugol’s Iodine, in addition to what has already been stated, other considerations include the quantity of distilled water used and the ambient temperature when the product is made. Is lugol’s povidone iodine?

I am very toxic, and salt definitely helps. I'm reluctant to limit it to three days at a time, because even when I pulse, I'm still getting a lot of unpleasant side-effects, and they very definitely ease with my pink Himalayan salt or my other organic sea-salt. Lugol's iodine may also be used as an oxidizing germicide, however it is somewhat undesirable in that it may lead to scarring and discolors the skin temporarily. One way to avoid this problem is by using a solution of 70% ethanol to wash off the iodine later.

Health Leads makes Lugol's solution based on an American formulation: Lugol’s contains iodine (I) and potassium iodide (KI). For a 1000ml (1 quart) amount: 44g (1.5oz) of iodine and 88g (3 oz) of potassium iodide are added to distilled water and when dissolved this is topped up to make 1000ml of solution. However, it's a constantly changing situation, and since iodine, like all the other nutrients, gets used daily - hourly even - keeping your levels up on a regular basis is necessary. Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), also commonly called polyvidone or povidone, is a water-soluble polymer made from the monomer N-vinylpyrrolidone. Is it safe to drink lugol’s iodine?J. Wolff, I.L.
