At the longer end, or rather when focusing from close to far, you start to see a noticeable lag in the focus speed–especially on the Sport version.

Amazingly, Canon cameras seem to recognize this lens and have correction data available. My Canon 5DS/R and EOSR with EF Adapter both do. The tripod foot also works as a handle making it easy to carry this lens and/or your camera together. For those unfamiliar with its prowess, the Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary is not just a lens; it’s a testament to Sigma’s dedication to providing photographers with tools that push the boundaries of what’s possible. A deep, circular hood is supplied as standard with the lens, which does a great job of protecting the lens from extraneous light that may cause unwanted flare and loss of contrast. During testing there were no issues with flare and contrast holds up well, even when shooting into the light. Personally I own and love my Canon 100-400mm L IS II, which focuses faster and is smaller, lighter, less expensive and much better made of almost all metal — but doesn't go to 600mm. I'm always interested when testing lenses to see how the REAL focal length of a lens compares with the advertised focal length.

Focal length is actually kind of complicated to figure out without some serious scientific measuring, but I do like to compare lenses of the same marketed focal length and see which one has more reach. But I do have to point out that even without weather sealed lenses, I've only once had issues with a lens getting dirty inside. Of course, that wouldn't matter if the lens itself was no good. Fortunately, it's excellent. The optical path is a little different from the DSLR version, including 25 elements arranged in 15 groups, and it produces impressive sharpness throughout the entirety of the zoom range. There's some inevitable fall-off in the corners, but not enough to worry about, and it's the sort of thing that will be hidden anyway when you're shooting with a shallow depth of field. In the 150-400mm sector of the zoom range, the Contemporary lens exhibits a little more color fringing towards the edges and corners of the image frame. Even so, it’s of a fairly insignificant amount, and automatic correction is available for both lenses in recent and current Canon and Nikon cameras. The Contemporary lens also gives a little more pincushion distortion than the Sports lens at all zoom settings but, again, automatic in-camera correction is available and it's easy to correct at the editing stage, if you feel it’s necessary.
