The struggles don’t end with her accident, though. Jeremy and Verity lost their twin daughters in two accidents, as well. Now, Jeremy Crawford, the husband of Verity, offers Lowen the chance to become financially stable if she finishes the series. There is a bit of a catch, though. She has to stay at Crawford’s residence and rummage through the manuscript there. A Chance Never to Repeat If you don't know the plot: Lowen, a struggling writer, is hired by Jeremy to finish his wife Verity's body of work after an accident leaves her unable to finish. Lowen finds an autobiography that reveals all sorts of juicy drama and murders, but decides to just have sex with Jeremy instead of do much about it until she can find a way to ensure Verity's story will get him to run away with her instead. Ill-advised, Lowen, ill-advised. Bonus points if you just pretend this is someone finishing Sue Grafton's alphabet series. Would have preferred that, honestly.

Like many of today’s bestselling authors, Hoover doesn’t overly concern herself with character development. The people who populate her books can generally be slotted into two categories: likable heroes or monsters. In lieu of personality traits, they carry past traumas or past transgressions. And for all the plot twists and gut-punching climaxes that Hoover’s fans rave about, internal transformations are light on the ground. And if you don’t find yourself enjoying it, it’s one of the shorter books I’ve ever read – I finished it in one day – so you won’t have long before you can finish it and get to your next. Verity characters – 4/5 This book just tied with my favorite book for the year so far. When this writer writes another thriller, I will be snatching this one off the shelves right away. I strongly recommend this book to all thriller fans that love a disturbing and dark thriller. Lowen "forgiving" or "justifying" Jeremy's double murder attempts was brutal. C'mon. Not during women's history month. That is the only parallel to her usual works as the book ends with an ending which is not quite really an ending. You have room to question it. Ask yourself how the story could continue and with this book, it can drive you insane. And that finale . . . stunning. I was so sure I’d pinpointed exactly what was happening and why, but I was wrong. So very wrong. Okay, let’s talk about the final twist. The whole time, I knew there was clearly something about either Lowen’s narration or Verity’s manuscript that was false, I just couldn’t figure out what it was or why. Have you ever finished a book and thought… WTF did I just read? Verity is one of those books that will do that to you. Word to the wise for CoHo fans: this is not your typical book from Colleen Hoover. It’s amazingly written and it’s a completely captivating read, but it’s so different from anything she’s ever put out before. The letter describes how Verity wrote the manuscript as a writing exercise to practice her antagonistic point of view that she uses for her novels. She also writes about how Jeremy knew about the manuscript and had forced her into the "accident" because of it.

But, what does Crew mean that her mother is talking to him? Why is Verity staring right into her eyes? How can the door be closed from outside, when Jeremy was with Lowen? How can a brain-dead woman stand above Lowen and watch while her husband is cheating on her? Immediately I want to express just how much the heroine ruined this whole book for me. Reading from her POV was like taking a knife, exposing every nerve in my body, and pouring vinegar all over them. To be truthful I don't even remember her name. Every time it was spelt out, I read it, then instantly like my brain knows self-preservation, it erases the letters as if I never saw them. Loren? Mulan? Rowan? No clue. The drastic turns in the manuscript get darker at every chapter Lowen (and we) read; Verity attempting to smother her daughter was so evil and heartless to read that I almost DNFed the book. But my bone-deep need to get to the end of the book kept me going so I read through every dark twist and every evil turn, only to be blindsided by the absolutely unhinged ending. Let me ask you, Ms. Hoover, who gave you the right to end this dizzying, mind-numbing story with another mystery? Naturally, while it is fun to try and find our own way through this labyrinth, it’s also just as fascinating to see Lowen navigating her way through the mess she has found herself in, holding information she should have never seen in the first place. In large part, her fascinating nature is born from the author’s impressive ability to create complex and multi-layered characters, a talent which I believe plays a large part in making the story as memorable as it is.

The book ends with a letter, written by present-day Verity, making us question everything, I mean everything, we read about so far. The letter makes us doubt the manuscript, Jeremy’s integrity, and even the death of a child, and we readers do NOT get the resolution we are after. Instead, we are left with disbelief and then awe at how masterfully Hoover has crafted a story so engrossing and impactful that it leaves readers dumbfounded and arguing in online forums over one question: “Which truth was she manipulating?”

Colleen Hoover’s brilliant thriller romance Verity is without a doubt one of her most absorbing novels. It is on a completely different note from Hoover’s previous romance novels, such as Maybe Someday, and this adds to the liveliness of the novel. Verity book is a standalone novel that was published in the year of 2018. There are two things that kind of bothered me, but with me, storytelling is everything. And this book had it in spades. In Verity, Lowen Ashley is a writer who is hired to write the last three novels in a bestselling book series because the author, Verity Crawford, is unable to do so herself. However, in the process of looking over Verity’s notes about the books, Lowen discovers an autobiographical manuscript written by Verity that reveals dark secrets about Verity’s life. I want to preface my full review with the disclaimer that prior to reading this book, I liked Colleen Hoover as an author. Her book “It Ends with Us” is positively leagues above “Verity,” therefore my expectations going into this book were high. I thought fondly of Colleen’s writing, and was anything but a skeptic.Verity shows us her obsessive love for Jeremy, and she’s explicit about their sexual relationship and how she used her sexuality to manipulate him. Lowen, in response, sympathizes with Jeremy’s obliviousness to Verity’s vileness and for having to care for such a partner, leading to growing feelings between Lowen and Jeremy. However, that’s a big element of what makes Verity a captivating experience – as she reads from Verity’s autobiography, we don’t know what to believe. Reading Verity was a rollercoaster ride, especially told from the perspective of Lowen. We don’t know whether what she’s experiencing is the truth, or whether things are just in her imagination. Lowen isn’t the smartest heroine, despite being a writer and successor of Verity’s series. She’s naive, instantly falls in love with Jeremy, and doesn’t question things as much as she does. Her character was believable though, as a young, struggling writer who is suddenly offered a great job and a place to stay from a handsome man. An autobiography encouraging the reader to like the author is not a true autobiography. No one is likable from the inside out. One should only walk away from an autobiography with, at best, an uncomfortable distaste for its author. by Colleen Hoover narrated by Vanessa Johansson & Amy Landon, set in the Vermont countryside, present day

All of the characters were done so well. I could just vision them in my head. I love her writing style. This was one intense read. Let me tell you this author writes so well. OMG!OMG! OMG! The ending was just perfect. I loved that twist. Wow! Lowen is essentially asked to write the rest of a book series for an incredibly famous author and her husband asks if she would come to stay at their house for a while to study her notes so she has a better understanding of how to finish the final three books. When she arrives at her publisher’s office, she receives a rather unusual proposition from Jeremy Crawford, husband to Verity, a famous and successful author, now catatonic following a terrible accident. Lowen is to finish the last three books in a series written by Verity, with the pay being seventy-five thousand for each volume. Naturally, she accepts the offer, and goes to live at the large Crawford family home in Vermont. Told in alternating chapters, Lowen’s account of the present and Verity’s account of the events leading up to the present paint a dark, uncomfortable picture of their intermingled narratives. But the discomfort a reader may feel is second to the intrigue that Hoover’s skillful writing evokes. When I found out that Hoover had published an ebook, I got it immediately. Verity is addictive. I could not put it down. It is consuming you and leaves you speechless. Never in my life have I read a book so well written and with so many plot twists that you just cannot wrap your head around it. You just do not know what the truth is in the end.
