I’ve worn a lot of watches with stainless steel bracelets, and none of them have the feel that this one does. That’s not necessarily a good thing, though it also isn’t necessary a bad thing, either. It’s more a statement of fact. I wish that Bulova had decided to fit a sapphire crystal to this watch. I know it would have added a bit to the price, but I think it’d have made it a better piece overall. The rest of the watch feels indestructible, making the choice of a mineral crystal a little off-base. The watch uses an automatic self-winding movement, a Japanese Miyota automatic. As with the previous watch is has a simple 30m water resistance rating. The Bulova watches quality shows itself again in this model. The ridged circular brown ring that surrounds the inner dial gives a two-tone appearance, but next to all the steel it is more or less invisible. As a result, the open heart display seems very awkward. It doesn’t necessarily look bad, but it’s hardly at the top of the list for looks, either.

Higher-end timepieces, such as Accu-Swiss watches, are manufactured in Switzerland, including movements, cases, and final assembly. The case isn’t much larger than other affordable automatics that I’ve tested, but that bracelet… it’s an attention getter, and it also makes the 96A101 look much bigger than it really is. It looks awkwardly large on my wrists (7.25″ish around), and that’s almost entirely due to the bracelet. My favourite of these has to be the precisionist series, they were introduced by Bulova in 2010. It’s a new type of quartz watch with a higher frequency crystal, 262 144 Hz, that’s eight times the current industry standard of 32 768 Hz. They have an accuracy of +/- 10 seconds per year and have a lovely smooth sweeping second hand, a feature lot of people looking for in high quality watches. Last up we have another great watch from the popular Marine Star collection. Another one of the best Bulova watches available, the 98B203 has this larger 43mm design with some great detailing with the coin edged bezel. As it typical of the Marine Star series, the watch has a 100m water resistance rating. As for the movement, you guessed it, another Japanese Miyota. So is Bulova a good watch brand? The Marine Star collection are definitely a fine example of their craftsmanship.
