Description

I tested the pigment strength by increasingly diluting a small square of pencil drawn on Bristol board. The lightfast properties, too, are beyond impressive. Of the 76 colours in the range, 61 have a maximum score of five stars on the Blue Wool Scale, assuring at least 100 years of stability in normal room conditions, whether applied wet or dry. Water soluble pencils in a range of exceptional colors : the soft and water soluble tip of the pencil allows for clean and precise lines that rival paintbrushes for intense colors. Caran d’Ache Museum Aquarelle Watercolour Pencils are available indivdually and in sets. Supracolor

To introduce texture to the muddy ploughed strip, I scribbled directly on to the paper and then added water with a wet brush. Use this handy online tool to find each pencil’s name, pencil number and lightfast rating. Also see a colour swatch for each coloured pencils. These colour swatches are drawn with the dry pencil on the left of the image. The wet pencil is on the right of the image. Colour accuracy vs the colour barrel is fairly good. Similar to other brands the barrel colour is slightly darker than the colour that appears on the paper. Although the barrel design looks sharp I personally prefer when the entire pencil is the same colour vs the colour-dip tip. This post is part of a series in which I have had a closer look at the coloured pencils in my art and craft stash for your information. Conclusion

Winsor & Newton Studio Collection Watercolour Pencils are available in sets. We hope this article helps you choose the best watercolour pencil!

Used with water the colours can be startlingly intense, which took a little getting used to. I found I was applying too much pencil; just a small amount allows a more subtle watercolour wash effect. Reserve heavier applications for an inky look. Watercolour Pencils offer more versatility than a standard colouring pencil, but they do have a slightly steeper learning curve. With a single watercolour pencil you’ll essentially have two colouring tools in one and you’ll be able to make a whole variety of different marks. Use watercolour pencils dry and you probably won’t be able to tell them apart from a standard colouring pencil. Their texture may feel a little drier, and they may not layer quite as effectively – but overall they’re very similar. There’s nothing stopping you from using your watercolour pencils dry and never activating them with water. However, be careful not to splash your drawing or the colour will run and you could ruin it. Prismalo are the hobby or beginner grade water soluble pencil from Caran d’Ache. They have a thin, delicate lead that lends itself well to fine detail work. The colour laydown isn’t quite as punchy as either Museum or Supracolor, and you’ll notice even when wet the hues of the pencils aren’t quite as vibrant. That being said, they’re a great pencil for any beginner looking to explore water soluble pencils. Like Supracolor, these pencils have a colour matched, varnished barrel – however the colour information stamped on each pencil is a little sparse.

For the purposes of this review, I’m also including the Pallette Aquarelle also by Caran D’Ache. This product is a perfect pairing because it’s specially designed with a textured side that works well for applying dry pencil and adding water with a paintbrush to liquify it. I’ll be giving my thoughts on this product as well at the end of the review. For Frank the Suffolk punch and his handler Pete I made a palette as described, and applied a couple of layers of colour with a brush.
