Yes?" said Willy Wonka. Charlie stared at the book and continued. "’s Avonds als hij zijn avondmaal van waterige koolsoep op had, ging Sjakie altijd naar de kamer van zijn vier grootouders om naar hun verhalen te luisteren en ze daarna goedenacht te zeggen." Dahl was born in 1916 in Wales to wealthy Norwegian parents, was educated in England, and later worked in Kenya and modern-day Tanzania on behalf of Shell Oil. He joined the Royal Air Force during World War II, and was a squadron leader. His first published work (inspired by a conversation with “Horatio Hornblower” creator C.S. Forester) was a story about his wartime adventures. He died in 1990 (and was ranked Forbes’s highest paid dead celebrity in 2021) and did not avoid criticism in his own lifetime. And it did. It was published in the US in 1964 and sold 10,000 copies in the first week (and was acclaimed as "fertile in invention, rich in humour, acutely observant … he lets his imagination rip in fairyland" in the New York Times), and has been pretty much flying off the shelves ever since. Roald Dahl’s classic tale has been adapted into two major motion pictures, Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory (1971) and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005). In 1971, Dahl wrote a sequel, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, published in 1972. additional illustrations from the artists who have illustrated Charlie and the Chocolate Factory through the years: Joseph Schindelman, Faith Jaques, Michael Foreman and Quentin Blake.

Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes have been a family favourite since it was published in 1982. For the uninitiated, Revolting Rhymes were Roald Dahl’s reimagining of six classic fairy tales. Of course, being Roald Dahl, nothing is straightforward. These fairy tales are gross, bloodthirsty, and most importantly hilarious. Sir Quentin Blake’s illustrations combine with Dahl’s poetry to make this book really special. Blake’s trademark style is let loose, emphasising the spiky humour of the stories. Who can forget Blake’s drawing of Little Red Riding Hood drying her hair, while on the phone to one of the Three Little Pigs?Like his first book for children, James and the Giant Peach, it initially struggled to find a UK publisher. Dahl blamed the publishers' "priggish, obtuse, stuffiness".
