This is Lovecraft's last major work, and I can see how several of his ideas, Mysteries of the Heavens Revealed By Astronomy in XIV Parts". Asheville Gazette-News. February 16, 1915. p.4. The Secret of the Grave" (before 1902; unpublished, nonextant, may simply be "The Mystery of the Grave-Yard")Mysteries of Time and Spirit: The Letters of H. P. Lovecraft and Donald Wandrei ( ISBN 1-892389-49-5)

I now know exactly which collection I need, and I thank your contribution while searching for it (or rather confirming the chance title I brought up in my first message but still being unsure). I initially wasn't impressed by the overall design when browsing it at a friend's place some years ago, but since then I've decided I'm however going to glue a stained, pale sheepskin on the existing covers to make it work nicely on the shelf. Beyond the Wall of Sleep: It turns out the term ‘white trash’ was in use as early as 1919. Who knew? Another dream-world tale, more cosmic than the last, in which a psychiatrist receives a six-month paid vacation for taking on too much stress from his patient, a degenerate from that famous hotbed of brutish hillbillies, the Catskills. Points for ‘ululation’, ‘effulgent’ (twice), and ‘architraves’. In the Vault: Excellent short traditional horror, with an effective build-up and a dramatic, italicized flourish of an ending. Worthy of Tales from the Crypt.

The Colour out of Space - this one blew me away, and possibly might be my favourite tale. Highly recommend.

Note: In the summer of 2013, students in Brown's Public Humanities program developed an augmented reality tour of Lovecraft's Providence for NecronomiCon Providence. Further information is available at: calloflovecraft.com The Call of Cthulhu - come on! You're gonna read Lovecraft and not read about the Great Old One?! That would be unheard of!! At the Mountains of Madness is one of the primary expository works about the Old Ones, here dubbed the “Elder Things” by the explorers as they stumble upon more and more evidence. For instance, Dyer and another colleague discover the remains of massive, inhuman architecture, along with etchings that explain the evolution of the Elder Things and imply their eventual migration into the ocean. Consequently I've come to the conclusion that "The Complete Fiction" by Barnes & Nobles seems to be the one for me, even if I'm also intrigued by the Penguin Classics and Penguin Modern Classics volumes (also these edited by Joshi).

J. Chapman Miske. Note: scholar S.T. Joshi considers this a spurious Lovecraft story. It was an account of a dream extracted from one of Lovecraft's letters by editor Miske (cf. " The Evil Clergyman", and " The Very Old Folk"), and published under a title given it by Miske. Olmstead meets an old townie called Zadok Allen, who provides an, er, interesting explanation for the town’s peculiarities: that its human inhabitants have devoted themselves to a brutal race of fish-like humanoids known as the “Deep Ones,” who have forced humans to breed with them. Those walking the streets of Innsmouth are the resulting offspring — as they mature, they will grow to resemble the Deep Ones, eventually joining them in their underwater cities. You also have Lovecraft to thank for a raft of awesome boardgames and RPGs, from the classic Call of Cthulhu to Eldritch Horror and Cthulhu Wars.

At this essay's start, Lovecraft presents his view of cosmic horror as the ultimate distillation of primal humanity's fear, which I found similar to Terry Pratchett's description of the roots of fantasy in the introduction to The Ultimate Encyclopedia of Fantasy. It goes on to describe trends in the genre, highlighting popular and notable works in horror from the 18th century to Lovecraft's present day. Medusa's Coil and Others: The Annotated Revisions and Collaborations of H.P. Another classic Lovecraft novella, and probably his best-known work after Cthulhu, At the Mountains of Madness describes a failed (to put it lightly) Antarctic expedition as recounted by Professor William Dyer. Upon arriving at their base, Dyer and his colleagues are thrilled to unearth the remains of a previously undiscovered prehistoric species — some specimens of which are in perfect condition. However, their excitement soon turns to terror as they realize that these “specimens” may not be so lifeless after all. This is a short and fairly simple story that, while undeniably atmospheric, is also undeniably juvenile. It all builds toward a twist that is – these days at least – a bit overdone. Whereas many of these other stories are uniquely Lovecraftian, I found this one derivative.
