My two go-to brands of needles are Schmetz needles and Organ needles, although there are many different needle manufacturers. In my experience, glover’s needles are the best choice for working with leather by hand. Those are the needles I used to finish my purse. Begin by marking your stitching lines on the leather. These lines, typically running about 1/8th to 1/4th of an inch from the edge of the leather piece, indicate where your stitches will be placed. You can use a groover tool to mark these lines, which carves a small groove into the leather, guiding your stitches and contributing to a clean finish. Step 2: Punch Stitch Holes They come with medium ballpoint tip; they have special scarf and a special eye that help the user in stitching stretchy fabrics and elastic. This type of needle is a good option for swimwear. Needle sizing Before starting your actual project, it is recommended to test the needle on a scrap piece of the same leather. This allows you to assess the needle’s performance, stitch quality, and suitability for the specific leather type. Testing beforehand helps avoid potential issues and ensures a smoother sewing experience. Maintenance and Care of Leather Needles

Round point needles have a slightly rounded tip and are best for leather that has been pre-punched with holes. They’re less likely to damage the leather and can easily slide through pre-made holes. Larger number means larger blade size of the needle, the number always displayed on the cover, e.g. 70/10 and 60/8.Schmetz needle numbering is simple to follow, and the types are clearly displayed on each needle box, which is why I often prefer them. Pay close attention to thread tension. If your stitches don’t look right, thread tension is likely to be the culprit. Perfect your thread tension by testing on scraps first. When sewing leather, it’s important to use the right stitching technique to ensure that the stitches are strong and durable. Here are some stitching techniques that work well with leather:

They come with rounded tip and are used on woven or sturdy knits (Not all of them though). Jersey Needles Structure– Leather isn’t made up of a network of fibres like fabrics are. It has a dense structure. This has implications for how it is used. The most important thing to note when working with leather is that unlike most fabrics, piercing leather with a needle leaves a permanent and visible mark in the material. On a more positive note, it also means no frayed ends!Too long of a stitch and the holes will be visible and weaken the structure of your project. Specialty Feet It is used to create two rows of stitching at once. It has two needles mounted on the same shaft and uses one bobbin for both threads. The second thread is obtained from a special spool placed above or below the fabric. While the above three general-purpose sewing needles cover many projects, there are also specialty needles that accomplish certain tasks even better. It sews incredibly fast — at 1,100 stitches per minute — and is just as easy to use as any other Singer sewing machine.
