Description

This is the second book in the Retired Detectives Club series by Steph Broadribb. Like the first book, the chapters tell the story from different points of view of the four members. It makes for a more interesting and detailed plot (though there are times I wish I could just keep reading what is happening with a certain character!). That doesn't really hinder the enjoyment of the story though. If anything, it increases the suspense. Death on the beach is the third title in The Retired Detectives Club series and I think it’s the best one yet each book improves on the previous one. This makes for compelling storytelling, it's great to see flawed characters battling with their flaws—but it's a good thing they're all retired because this is the kind of thing that should hurt a career.

Moira is a retired DCI, who moved from London to Florida to start enjoying an early retirement in a rather luxurious and, supposedly, incredibly safe community. But The Homestead is not the paradise it promises to be in the brochures. As Moira discovers when one morning she comes across the body of a woman floating in a pool. The local police force doesn’t seem to be in a hurry to investigate so Moira and three other residents of The Homestead, also former law enforcement, take matters into their own hands. My first task in 2022 will be to finish a polished first draft of Retired Detectives Book 2 and send it off to my editor by my deadline at the end of January. I’ll then be focusing on the editing of that book before starting the planning for the third instalment in the series. And I’m really looking forward to launching DEATH IN THE SUNSHINE in March. Anyway, the premise was great. The execution? Let's say not so much. Some of the characters were just flat-out unlikeable, a few were unbelievable and/or caricatures of a type, and there was _way_ too much angsty deep dark secret malarkey going on for my taste. Like, I literally started rolling my eyes any time any of those dead horses got beaten again after about a third of the way through the book. As with the previous two books in this series, the various chapters are told from the different perspectives of the four retirees. This gives the reader the opportunity to get to know each of the characters a bit more and see how they work or what their inner thoughts are of the others or situations they are in. It can be very insightful.

After they solved a murder a few months earlier, the Retired Detectives Club has gained a certain amount of notoriety around the Homestead Retirement Community, so it's not terribly surprising that when a resident has some concerns they call them for help. Particularly when that resident has had bad experiences with the police previously. The ending is predictable, but no less enjoyable because of it. A solid contribution to a summer easy breezy whodunnit series.

The ending concludes this episode while providing the set up for the next, but I probably won't be returning for more. Programming Chair, Ian Rankin, along with Sharon Canavar and all at Harrogate International Festivals and the team at the Old Swan Hotel did a totally awesome job – making a friendly, fun and fresh-air filled programme with the most wonderful festival atmosphere. My main criticism probably stems from the fact that I had not read the first two books in the series, but jumped straight to the third book. I normally like cozy crime, but here I missed some base for the story. It is mentioned several times that they don't have a PI license, so why does everyone talk to them? If my family member had been murdered, I wouldn't have spoken to anyone without credentials. Also, what evidence could they find that would stand up in court? I know that this is fiction, but I would have needed more justification for the investigation to seem realistic to me. If you're an avid reader of the series, you might disagree with my point though,

She’s a young woman that is pretty tough and keeps busy with her career working as a bounty hunter in Florida. She’s fearless in the field, which is pretty important because working this job in the Sunshine State is a wild gig. As much as she values her job, she works it to provide for her daughter.

Crime investigation novels are a hit or a miss for me, but I really enjoyed this one. It's the perfect balance of investigation and procedure mixed with real time drama from the characters' own lives. It almost felt like a Florida version of Blue Bloods, one of my favorite shows of all time. I’m thrilled to announce that book four in the Lori Anderson thriller series – Deep Dark Night – is published in ebook now! Potential suspects and alibis aren't clear cut so a dangerous trap is set - putting one of the team members at risk in a dramatic reveal and takedown.Deep Down Dead is the first novel in the Lori Anderson series. In this fun new story from a talented author, readers get introduced to the main character in this story, named Lori Anderson! Also, Steph Broadribb's writing got in the way of her story some because of how she had British phraseology in play when the characters in a given situation were Americans. Sorry, love, you need to write everything in American English except for what the British characters are saying and/or thinking. (A descriptive sentence about a car by the kerb and several references to "hospital" instead of "the hospital" were particuarly irksome.) That's me saying this as a real Anglophile, too! I absolutely loved every bit of this story. Be it the writing, the mystery behind the kidnapping, the excitement and tension of finding Cody before it is too late, suspense, character development (Moira's was the best!) and plot to story development - absolutely Fantabulous! instead of 4 only because at times I felt the characters seemed a bit immature in their thinking/ feelings. Maybe that's just me but it was how I felt while reading. Example: Phillip's "they won't support me, that's fine I'll go off on my own to follow this lead and it'll SHOW THEM" (paraphrasing his thoughts). Lol, felt a little bit childish. Again, maybe it's just me (shrug).
