But I'm willing to overlook that issue as the book and it's plot were extraordinary and I loved Mulford's writing style!

I was immediately immersed into the book and it started out with a good pacing but I felt like the pacing felt off later on. I felt that the structure of the writing was a bit unbalanced and that's what I struggled with while reading. Despite its flaws, it's a good debut novel. The author establishes a unique world with witches at the bottom of the hierarchy. The Fae ruled the five courts of Okrith, but with the fall of the High Mountain Court to the Northern Court King, they are four as of now. the room filled with the sound of her wet, sniffing breaths. a weighted silence. and they’d never know truly what it meant to her, to sit there and listen to her cry. sitting there in that stillness spoke straight into the deepest parts of her soul: we’re here. we see you. we won’t let you fall.” Absolutely amazing. LGBTQ+ representation. Amazing friendships, and romances. I had suspicions about who was behind it, but never fully guessed. I really enjoyed it!I am torn as to what my rating should be. I have to admit, in the first half of the book it would have been closer to 3 stars. This book right here! Look Bri was already a favorite character from the previous books and her getting time to shine is what I was looking for. You get her as you know her from before, but also get the chance to see her finally feel like she can lower her guards along the way. I think AK does a great job capturing the dual nature of warriors in this character. Bri is charged with guarding Princess Abalina, who is more than a handful in a land where no one can be trusted.

A pet peeve of mine would be that every explanation happened through Remy, and I couldn't help but think: how can a girl who's been hiding all her life, received little to no education, know everything? Other than that, Okrith is shaping up nicely. I can see it as a satisfying universe for a high fantasy story, with its own rituals, social hierarchy, religion, and military. A.K. Mulford delivers another magical installment in her fantasy ""The Five Crowns of Okrith" series with the charismatic, tough, and entirely lovable Bri at the center. From the first books of the series, we know that Bri is a loyal if not overly stubborn friend, set on always helping those she loves. Now, we get to learn more of her story, including the prophecy that has haunted her since birth and has left her unwelcomed in her home court. We get to see Bri's vulnerable side as she struggles with her growing feelings for the princess she's been destined to usurp - all while trying to solve who assassinated the queen and threatens the future of the Western Court if not all of Okrith. Having Bri as the MC was an absolute delight - she is snarky and caring, dedicated to doing what's right, but not without having a bit of fun. Princess Abalina, Lina, may wear many masks, but proves an equally witty match with a heart of gold underneath - will her heart remain solely for her people and court, or does it have room for her new unofficial guard? This book really has it all. It’s got adventure, romance, friendships, magic, and great world building. And there’s twists that keep you guessing. I love this book so much Remy and Hale have officially wormed their way into my heart. I must give credit that the worldbuilding in this was done really well, and I think that was one of the elements that were really topnotch and why I was so hooked in the beginning. It's not really info-dumpy. It's a slow pace in which you can learn to understand how the realms fit together. There's politics, there's classism, and I did enjoy the magic system.

The magic system was thought out and the world building was balanced but I was definitely wishing this had more and I hope we get to see more in depth looks into both in the next book. I'm also hoping very much the author will go into some genealogy with relation to certain powers to answer questions I'm sure many others had. Worldbuilding is done very well, and you learn more and more about the world, the politics and the history, as the story continues in each book and novella. There are fae and humans. There are five courts of Okirth – The High, North, South, West and East Courts. Fae are the royalty of each court. There is quite a bit of intrigue between the courts, the witches, humans and Fae. I think Mulford does a great job of showing us pieces of the world to build that history and different cultures between each court and kind of witch. As to the world we are in, there are different kinds of witches – Brown, Green, Blue, Red, and the mysterious Purple wishes who are thought extinct. Brown witches heal, Green witches often work with herbs, etc., to cook amazing foods, Blue witches have visions and can see the future, and Red witches have almost a telekinesis power. The red witches have been hunted for years because of previous politics, and court intrigue (see “The High Mountain Court”), but this practice is finally coming to end – much to the witch hunter’s anger. The magic system within the novels is well thought out, and we slowly discover pieces of it in each book. For each court, as we are placed within that world, we get to see more of a certain kind of witch and how they practice. Never let anyone else tell you who you are, Remy, not even me. No one decides how bright you shine but you.”This is one of those under the radar books that go unnoticed but have the potential of gaining a larger audience. Can't wait to continue the series with the fourth volume following Talhan and Neelo.A great mix of magic, adventure, action and romance. Expression is my favorite thing in this world. All directions and colors are represented and there are no barriers. You love who you love and no one bats an eyelid.Buri is asked for help by her friend and lover Delta. Delta is badly injured when Buri arrives and she needs help to protect the new heiress of the West, Princess Avalina.
