Our host, who is the 21st generation of his family to run the inn, warmly welcomes us to his historic property. Reputedly founded in 1555 by Takeda Shingen, a pre-eminent samurai overlord prior to the Edo Period (1603-1868), the inn has the unusual boast of two onsen of different mineral composition. Tonight we first indulge ourselves in the hot springs waters before enjoying a kaiseki Japanese evening banquet.

We end our walk at the source spring of Himekawa, a crystal clear river that flows north to the Sea of Japan and intersects frequently with the Salt Road for the rest of our tour. From here a short transfer by vehicle brings us to our accommodation in Hakuba, an internationally famed ski resort that hosted the 1998 Winter Olympics. We are now deep in the Japan’s Northern Alps where, in winter, snowfall reaches 11 meters and more. During our visit, however, the snow has retreated to the peaks of the highest mountains providing us with classic alpine views. It is easy to imagine, however, that their daily toil was relieved by the glorious surrounding landscape of oft snow-capped mountains, pristine buna beech forests and crystal-clear streams; a scene that often seems to be little changed to this day.

This ancient route winds precipitously for more than 6000 miles, through the Hengduan Mountains—a major tea-producing area in China—and on to Tibet and India. The road also crosses numerous rivers, making it one of the most dangerous of the ancient trade routes. The main goods traveling the route were Chinese tea and Tibetan warhorses, with direct trades of tea-for-horses and vice versa being the main goal of merchants plying the route. Parts of the route were used starting c.1600 BCE, but people began using the entire path for trade from around the seventh century CE, and large-scale trade began taking place starting in the Song dynasty (960–1279). The film project will be based on Raynor Winn‘s global bestselling memoir of the same name. It will also mark the big screen directorial feature debut for Tony and Olivier award-winning theatre director Marianne Elliott ( Company, War Horse). The military roads are lined by abundant flowers belonging to the 2,600 plant species recorded in this area. The Ligurian and Maritime Alps boast such great botanical wealth because environmental conditions can vary considerably on different sides of the same mountain, with the southern slopes enjoying a Mediterranean climate and the others a continental one.
