Apply a brushwood killer to the leaves of the Ivy using a sprayer. Leave for 7-10 days for the plant to soak up the spray. Ground ivy can be eradicated with a non-selective weed killer, such as Roundup. Glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, will invade the ivy through the leaves and travel to the roots, killing the plant completely within 7–14 days. Step 3. Remove as much ivy roots as you can around the trunk by hand, leaving a safe zone of at least 3-4 feet radius. This way you can act fast if new ivy vines emerge. It is more effective against woody weeds, nettles, brambles, tree stumps in the grass, hardwood saplings, and other neglected non- crop areas. And it is also effective on broadleaf weeds and creeping charlie. When I tested Doff, I found that this 1-litre product will, when diluted, treat up to 400 sq metres, so it is perfect for almost all domestic gardens.

This is basically a complete wipeout – it won’t differentiate between weeds and plants – generally speaking these will be Glyphosate (the main weed killers I have extensively tested in this article). Preventative

Apply thoroughly, cover the entire ivy plant. Avoid spraying the leaves of other plants you intend to keep.

For now this is the cut and these are the best/strongest weed killers I am aware of in the UK. What we are going to test. Based on price, ability to kill weeds, least staining and residue, safety for kids and pets, ease of application, reliability, and customer support, I make my choice looking for the best overall score. When you use your watering can or sprayer, ensure you thoroughly clean out afterwards. It’s also advisable to not put remainder down the drain so only mix what you need.

How to kill ivy

The very next sentence in the Lancet report is the following “A second study reported a positive trend for haemangiosarcoma in male mice”. These weed killers are also lethal to bees – it peturbs their gut. For that reason using weed killer in Winter has its merits if you can find a dry spell. The bees won’t be about to be harmed. I am quite serious about preventing bee population decline and written on the matter extensively. Ivy can provide a habitat for wildlife, provide pollen and fruit for trees, and doesn’t harm walls as long as the mortar isn’t crumbling and is sound. Consider whether the ivy really needs to be removed in this case. We’ve aimed for dry on the ground, and a dry full day from the point of spraying. Anything less than that and I would have gone at it again. We wanted a genuine understanding of what these weed killers can actually do after all. Safety A spot gun with a solid stream nozzle is recommended and it is advisable to make a second cut under the first to catch any surplus herbicide. Work out how many hatchet cuts are needed according to the diameter of the trunk and space them round the girth e.g. trunk of 20cm diameter requires 2 x 2mls cuts.
