Combat Zone is set in 2045. That’s the same era as Cyberpunk Red, making it a prequel to CD Projekt Red’s video game. The action takes place in the aforementioned Combat Zones in and around Night City, a fictional West Coast metropolis located between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Imagine the most run-down urban areas of the rust belt overrun with heavily-armed gangs and you’ve got the right idea. You can pull these really cool heroic things out of combat,” Kovaleski said, “where I am bloodied, I’m on the street, I am crawling. You come up to headshot me and — Holy crap! — I pulled it out. I’m not dead. That’s pretty neat.” Cyberpunk 2077 has proved controversial for a number of reasons, not the least of which was its buggy launch on consoles. Talsorian Games, is one of the most elegant and accessible TTRPGs of the generation. Now, a new studio is taking that dark future world in a different direction with a new miniatures skirmish game titled Cyberpunk Red: Combat Zone. The miniatures in this review are actually representations of the players from a Cyberpunk Red game scheduled for Gary Con. Due to COVID-19, this event could not occur, but RealmSmith facilitated and recorded the actual game. What’s in the box?

This campaign begins with standard 20-foot containers, adds all-new half-sized 10-foot containers, and then is followed by “hab” containers: tiny homes and small shops for your present-day, near-future, or far-future battlefield. Finally, we bring you open-sided containers, perfect for protecting those valuable assets like your prized white tigers or that old smoky diesel generator. Moreover, you can turn them into bridges to cross a ravine or a skywalk for your hab units! We’re also introducing two new connectors that allow you to link your containers end-to-end, making your container setup even more varied and versatile. As if that wasn’t enough, there's even more! Combat Zone features a new, fast-paced game engine that where the players can act and react in organic, free-flowing actions. No rounds, no phases - the game just goes. As your characters take hits and get wounded, their abilities degrade - so strike hard and strike fast! In addition to having strong brand-name recognition, Combat Zone is also a lot less expensive than large-format wargames like Warhammer 40,000. That’s because you only need about three to six miniatures to do battle in a relatively small area — here, a space that’s 22 inches wide and 30 inches long. That means your investment in terms of both time and money will be much lower than with a traditional miniatures wargame. A fast-paced game engine.
