No notching or boring anywhere! Joist Construction: Good planning means less notching wood and boring The Timber Research and Development Association ( www.trada.co.uk) is a useful source of information regarding the drilling and notching of timber structural elements.

Anti-rotation sensor and activation indicator. Reduces speed and power to protect the user when activated Finally, if all else fails, drop your pipes and ducts down below the joists and box them in with wood-framed soffits. They’re least obtrusive when run along an outside wall or center beam. To understand the forces at work in a joist, particularly the tension and compression forces please see our project that explains how the forces that affect buildings work. Rules for Holes in Joists

# 4

Drill 1-1/2-in. holes anywhere in the web area of engineered I-joists, except within 6 in. of walls and rim joists. No greater diameter than 0.25 times the depth of the joist; should be drilled at the neutral axis2 ; and This cordless drill is built with a brushless motor and designed for the 20V/60V MAX* FLEXVOLT Battery System. It is designed for drilling through studs and joists, typically required during electric, data, and plumbing installations. If you’re already using the FlexVolt platform, adding the bare tool or an extra battery with the kit is definitely the way to go. But if you’re not, Makita sits real pretty in the value category and Milwaukee’s 2 x 9.0 Ah kit gives you a ton of battery capacity for the price. Where DeWalt is going to rise above the other two is with sheer power. If that’s your biggest priority, the DeWalt hole hawg is the way to go. With metal piping, drilling on an angle might not be an option. If you must go straight down, move the drill bit as much to one side of the joist as you can. Even cutting off one half of the joist and leaving the other half present is still better than nothing at all.

It should be noted that notches or holes should not be cut in roof rafters, other than at supports where the rafter may be birdsmouth 3to a depth not exceeding 0.33 times the rafter depth. Another tip to remember when drilling a hole through a floor joist is to err on the side of a smaller cut if you can. This is a rather simple idea. Ideally, you would not be cutting any holes, so you really do not want them any bigger than they need to be. Position bathroom vent fans so the ducts can run parallel to the joists—right up to where they exit the house. The maximum depth of a notch at the end of a joist (where it rests on a wall or beam) can’t exceed one-quarter of the joist depth.neutral axis of a joist lies along is the centre line of a joist and is where the joist has iether a compressive or tensional stress

As part of any new installation work or a re-wire, a cable, trunking or cable tray sometimes has to pass through an element of building construction, such as a floor, wall or beam, necessitating the formation of a notch or opening in the element. Unfortunately, sometimes you cannot see what is on the other side of a joist. There could be another joist with a small gap in between, or perhaps a hidden crawlspace that you will be snaking wire through. In this case, it is highly recommended that you look for a better route. Please Note: Every care was taken to ensure the information was correct at the time of publication. Any written guidance provided does not replace the user’s professional judgement. It is the responsibility of the dutyholder or person carrying out the work to ensure compliance with relevant building regulations or applicable technical standards. When in doubt, consult a structural engineer or your local building code official, who will have the final say. The diagrams and tables below illustrate the zones and sizes permissible for differing spans and joist depths. Where the property contains metal web joists as shown in Fig 2, no notching, drilling or cutting in either the timber flanges or the steel webs is permitted. For plumbing clearances, follow the guidelines shown in Figs. C and D. The place where you’ll be most tempted to create oversize holes and notches—under the bathtub is the part of a floor you can least afford to weaken. A cast iron tub, with water and occupant, can weigh in at more than 800 lbs. If you need to cut through a joist, firm up the floor as shown in Fig. E.
