Description

I have read many books that take place in different parts of India and somewhat expected to read the traditional new wife under the mother in law’s rules story but this one fell outside of that trope. Told in dual POVs of both Rachel and her mother in law, Swati, we are present when Swati shows up one day to live with Rachel and her husband Dhruv. Initially the pair of women are predictable in their actions and thoughts but it is not long before we see them each being affected by the other. It is easy to be afraid. Everyone stays where they are because they do not know what will happen to them when they go to a new place. But they are still the same. They can do more than they think.”

I love how this book did such a wonderful job of showing how connected we truly are. In an age of so much division and finger pointing, this book gently reminds us that we may look different but we are the same. We feel hope and experience loss and need love, even if we may do all those things differently. Franqi poignantly highlights the cultural differences of America/India and unique stresses of the MIL relationship while still honoring both.An amazingly intricate and ambitious first novel - ten years in the making - that puts an engrossing new spin on the traditional haunted-house tale.

Mother Land is a pleasant story of self-discovery and friendship with plenty of twists and intrigue to keep the reader engaged.” — Washington Independent Review of Books - When her mother abruptly decides to stop taking care of her children, working mother Julia Johnstone is forced to take a much more active role in their lives and education. She becomes friends with working-class Liz and stay-at-home dad Kevin Brady, and finds herself interacting with the local mother group, including their shallow and acerbic leader, Amanda. Julia is constantly overwhelmed by aspects of parenthood, and receives no support from her perpetually-absent husband Paul. Working at a PR firm at the start of the series, Julia eventually quits and starts her own PR business.

White, Peter (9 June 2023). "ABC Pilot Watch: Comedies Public Defenders& Motherland Remake Keeping It Together& Dramas The Hurt Unit& Judgement Not Moving Forward". Deadline Hollywood . Retrieved 10 June 2023. A strange book, it made me feel slightly uneasy - like listening in to a conversation I shouldn’t have been privy to. Mother Land is a piercing portrait of how a parent’s narcissism impacts a family. While the particulars of his tale are unique, Paul Theroux encapsulates with acute clarity and wisdom a circumstance that is familiar to millions of readers. The mother of a boy in the same year group as the other parents'. She also comes on the school trip, but gets confrontational with Liz when Liz accuses her son for being racist towards Meg's daughter Jade.
