Orla Kiely, OBE (born 1963) is an Irish fashion designer based in London. She began her career designing hats, and moved on to design work on handbags and a variety of other items including kitchenware and cars. She received a master's degree from the Royal College of Art. She worked with several companies before setting up her own business. Overseeing every single detail within the design process. Orla Kiely is meticulous, motivated and passionate. Prior to production, every aspect matters to her from the first phase of designing to making, mixing colours, creating art work and sampling. Even so, people shouldn't be so scared of pattern in the home. "You just have to go for it. That really is the point. Just be brave." This year would certainly seem to belong to the 55-year-old, with the publication of a book, Orla Kiely: A Life in Pattern , and a landmark exhibition of the same name at London's Fashion and Textile Museum, which is running until September 23. Kiely will also reflect upon her more than two-decade-long career in a lecture at the Victoria & Albert Museum during the London Design Festival. Her patterns will stand the test of time, and I think they already have. If you look at Stem, it’s been going continually for 18 years or so now.”Kiely credits her grandmother with being the creative influence in her life. Her father was an accountant; her mother studied science before being forced to give up work by her employers after she married. [2] Orla Kiely products were sold in over 33 countries. Her clothing, handbags, accessories and homewares have been featured in films, TV shows and even a novel, ‘Girl on a train’. Covered in magazines and newspapers, she appeared in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Sunday time and Grazia magazine. She talks about the way she sees the world as repeat patterns, and you can recognise the repetition in her work instantly, which adds a lot of clarity and means you can read an Orla Kiely design immediately. Once you start looking for it, you see it everywhere.” Kiely’s appeal is certainly international. The designer has devoted fans of various ages, from New York to Tokyo, all of whom consume her goods in different ways. “I have a feeling that there is a core customer who probably started with Orla when they were in their 20s, and they’ll continue with her, but she also has a very broad appeal to younger girls through her fashion,” Nothdruft suggests. Orla often recalled her vivid memories of her family kitchen with its olive-green Formica cupboards and worktops, entire walls with coordinating green and white patterned tiles, and a striking orange gloss ceiling and her Irish environment has informed her creative work since she was a student of textile design in Dublin. a b De Rosa, Sophie (27 September 2010).
