About this deal

Despite his association with sexuality, Priapus had been cursed to be an impotent god. His stories often depict his frustrations in pursuit of sexual satisfaction, particularly the interruption of his attempts by the donkey that belonged to Silenus.

A closer look at why we are excited about our next phase of excavation at Vindolanda Roman Fort. Priapus was said to be a son of Aphrodite, the goddess of love, or in some cases, Chione, a snow nymph. His father was variously given as Hermes, Dionysus, Pan or Adonis. [6] Hera, the wife of Zeus, out of a mix of outrage and jealousy with Aphrodite's promiscuity, cursed Priapus with enormous genitals. His mother promptly abandoned the child, and he was raised by shepherds. Priapus would go on to find favour with Hera later in his adult life, as the queen of the gods went on to appoint him as dancing instructor for her infant son Ares, the eventual god of war. The phallus was also used in sympathetic magic. I already knew that there was a phallus engraved above a baker’s oven at Pompeii to encourage the bread to rise, but according to Alberto Angela until recently in parts of Southern Campania (and possibly still now in remote areas) they used to cover kneaded dough with men’s underpants for the same reason!

Priapus is most identifiable in ancient art from his grotesquely enlarged phallus. The son of Aphrodite and Dionysus, he was rejected by the gods of Olympus for her physical and moral ugliness. The worship of Priapus seems to have originated east of ancient Greece in the general region surrounding the Hellespont, a narrow strait now known by the European name the Dardanelles. Reverence of phallic deities was widespread in the ancient world and the influence of neighboring phallic gods on the worship of the ithyphallic deity Priapus may have contributed to the growth of the cult. Indeed, Priapus' non-Greek origin is suggested in art and sculpture by the Persian cap that he often wears in artistic depictions. Grant, Michael; Mulas, Antonia (1997). Eros in Pompeii: The Erotic Art Collection of the Museum of Naples. New York: Stewart, Tabori and Chang. ISBN 978-1556706202. The heroically sized Hercules is one of antiquity’s most renowned sculptures, and it has permanently imprinted the image of the epic hero in the European mind.

Some stories of Lotis go on to say that she ran away when awoken by the ass, and Priapus chased after her. She was turned into the lotus plant to save her from assault. In an alternative story, it is the virgin goddess Hestia that falls asleep after a feast of the gods. Silenus happened to have tied up his donkey nearby and she was the one alerted to Priapus’s approach by its brays.
