About this deal

Kookaburra waterproof sail shades are made with a tighter weave which causes rainwater to simply run off the fabric. In Australia this would make it devilishly hot when sat under the sail with the sun beating down from above. Be sure to angle your sails for drainage to allow water to run off. Find a shallow container such as a heavy saucer and fill it with stones or sea glass so bees and butterflies have somewhere to safely land and take a cool, refreshing drink. 24. Transform Plant Pots into Ponds If you have lots of fish, or larger koi, you can add multiple shelters in different areas of the pond for more places to hide in summer. As well as providing shade, they work great to stop herons from taking fish, so would be a good addition to any koi or goldfish pond. img":"//www.rootsplants.co.uk/cdn/shop/files/blwa00744_8a4ac401-572d-4907-85c9-3984dc62f549.jpg?v=1691072732", This is especially true if your pond has fish. Pond fish, such as koi and goldfish, need nutrients to survive, and they get most of their nutrients from local plants. So, a pond that gets at least some sunlight during the day will be able to sustain more plants and other aquatic life for your fish to feed on.

The tiered water levels are perfect for all mammals to safely drink – it’s an idyll for frogs, newts, hedgehogs, and even grass snakes. Not to mention you! Insert long canes vertically into the ground, to markthe outer edge of the mould. Then lay string on the soil round the outside of the canes, to create your cutting line

Plants are probably my #1 favorite addition to a pond to provide some shading, namely because they also provide the added benefit of nutrient reduction too. Anything that can help out-compete the algae in some way is a good thing. Look for floating plants like lilies and lotus, or anything that can cover some of the surface.

But everything comes with a price they say, and sometimes the price you pay for ample sunlight is pond algae. The easiest option is to use a good quality butyl liner which allows for a more natural shape and look. Lay the liner in the hole and fill with water before cutting. This is really important because the liner will stretch and crease into the shape you have made. Once filled, I suggest you leave it overnight to make sure there is no other movement, and then you are ready to trim the edges. Allow at least a 50cm overlap which can simply be covered with existing turf or edged in gravel stone. Gravel makes a great surface with which to cover the bottom of the pool; make sure you rinse it first. You can use ordinary soil, but be warned, any organic matter will float to the top and it could take several weeks for the pool to clear. Raised ponds are also a great way to prevent accidental falls or your dog terrorising the frogs and fish. 2. Go Tiny With a Mini Pond A pond needs at least six hours of sunlight a day to maintain a healthy ecosystem. If your pond does not get enough sun, you may need to supplement it with artificial lighting. Can a fish pond be in full sun If possible, it’s best to place your pond in an area that gets at least a 4-6 hours of sunlight per day. Partial shade like this will provide an optimal balance of reduced algae and unwanted bacteria while also protecting your fish from harmful exposure to direct sunlight all day.As winterberry does best in loamy, saturated soils, it’s a perfect plant to place marginally in your pond or just outside of the water on the edge, so long as it has access to ample moisture. Another great feature of this plant is that it provides year-round color – small, green-white flowers appear in the spring if they get pollinated, and are then replaced by vibrant red berries that persist through the winter and provide a wonderful contrast to snow and the pond water.

Clear the area or remove the turf and start digging. Ideally you need to allow the pool to be 90cm (3ft) at its deepest, so that animals can escape the ice in the winter, with planting shelves of 45cm (18in) depth, any deeper and few marginal species will tolerate this as they are naturally root pruned when the water becomes deeper. To calculate the size of the liner you will need to add twice the maximum depth to both the width and the length. Don’t forget that the liner can easily be joined with tape. An ideal starting size is 1.8m x 1.2m. Once dug out, line the pool with soft sand, old carpet, or even several layers of newspaper. Make sure that you remove all sharp stones, remember that when the pool is full of water, the pressure on the liner will leave it vulnerable to puncture; good preparation at this stage is very important.

Advice for buying pond plants

Both of these species take anywhere from 5 years to a decade to reach their full size of up to 6 feet, and can live well beyond this range if provided with the right conditions. Be aware of their sharp, hooked thorns that are present on most rose species, and take care to plant them in locations where people or pets won’t get snagged. Their popularity means we have bred hundreds of domestic varieties, with flowers that can be lilac’s typical purple hue, or red, yellow, pink, white, or blue. Note that some species can reach up to 20 feet in height, so keep this in mind when trying to choose the variety that’s right for you. Regardless of the exact cultivar, most lilacs do best in sunny locations with moist but well-draining soil – they don’t want their feet completely wet, but should be watered regularly. img":"//www.rootsplants.co.uk/cdn/shop/products/PON050-1_d69804c0-6dc9-40e2-9015-a6987d49e3aa.jpg?v=1644777124", Second, it can cause algae blooms that deplete oxygen levels in the water and make it difficult for fish and other aquatic creatures to breathe.
