I have yet to read a book by Eva Ibbotson that I enjoy. Is it me? It must be me. This book started out great. The narration was fun and quirky. The premise was totally implausible, but I was taken with Agatha and her band of Yetis right from the start. In this case, the Abominables are adorable and guileless and sweet and totally harmless when you get to know them. But human hunters are cruel and terrible and just want to hurt them! The film follows a teenage girl named Yi (Bennet) who encounters a young Yeti on the roof of her apartment building in Shanghai, names him Everest and embarks on an epic quest to reunite the magical creature with his family at the highest point on Earth along with her mischievous friends Jin (Trainor) and Peng (Tsai), but the trio of friends will have to stay one-step ahead of Burnish (Izzard), a wealthy man intent on capturing a Yeti, and zoologist Dr. Zara (Paulson) to help Everest get home.

This animated adventure is sweet and entertaining enough to keep viewers amused, and it shares a bit about Chinese culture and underlines the importance of family, friendship, and teamwork. Everest's story is reminiscent of several other films about kids/people who find, protect, and commune with an unusual animal/creature/alien, but the twist of setting the film in Shanghai provides a window into the universe of three Chinese kids. They live in a high-rise apartment building, can ride a motorbike, and know how to get around on their own -- just as you'd expect from teens in the most populated city in the world. Everest the yeti might be a mythical creature, but the teen characters don't just seem authentic --- they're all voiced by Asian actors or actors of Asian descent. (One bonus piece of trivia: Trainor, the voice of Jin, is the grandson of legendary climber Tenzing Norgay, who -- along with Sir Edmund Hillary -- was the first to summit Mt. Everest.)This tale about a family of yetis was a fun read, although I wouldn't have known it was an Eva Ibbotson story if her name wasn't on the cover. After being familiar with her characters being witches and talking ghosts, I guess yetis weren't too unusual, but the characters did feel a bit thin. My favourite character was Hubert the yak, whom I feel was the only character that showed development (ironic, as he doesn't talk).
