About this deal

THE ABOMINABLES is a delightful, imaginative tale with a strong moral center. There are some laughs about the yetis, who sometimes take it to far (such as apologizing to a cake they're about to eat), but the earnestness of this novel is charming. The darker moments keep THE ABOMINABLES from becoming saccharine. Did you know you can flag iffy content? Adjust limits for Sex, Romance & Nudity in your kid's entertainment guide. A young Yeti escapes from a compound in Shanghai owned by wealthy businessman Mr. Burnish, who intends to use him to prove the existence of yetis to the world. Meanwhile, teenager Yi lives with her mother and Nai Nai (grandmother) in an apartment building. She leads a busy life, and neglects to spend time with her family and her friends, basketball fan Peng and his tech-savvy and popular cousin Jin. Yi is also a violinist, but has not played since her father's death, as he was a violinist, too. a b McLean, Tom (September 8, 2019). " 'Abominable': All Yeti for the Big Screen". Animation Magazine. Now, a posthumous novel THE ABOMINABLES is being released with artwork by Fiona Robinson. Robinson's illustrations are a great match for Ibbotson's words and really express the good-natured silliness of the yetis that star in this cross-country adventure. THE ABOMINABLES was completed by Ibbotson's son and editor, but there is no noticeable difference from Ibbotson's usual voice. Abominable". Universal Pictures. I have yet to read a book by Eva Ibbotson that I enjoy. Is it me? It must be me. This book started out great. The narration was fun and quirky. The premise was totally implausible, but I was taken with Agatha and her band of Yetis right from the start. In this case, the Abominables are adorable and guileless and sweet and totally harmless when you get to know them. But human hunters are cruel and terrible and just want to hurt them! So, it's up to a small band of humans to rescue the sweet creatures. Hans, Simran (13 October 2019). "Abominable review – sweet animated yeti adventure". The Observer. The Guardian. Some of the great many children who will love this book might, when they are older, hear its deeper soundings. Returning home to Shanghai with the help of Burnish, Yi spends more time with her mother, grandmother, Peng, and Jin. I loved the way this story included glimpses of history, various places across Europe and taught children values at the same time. Honestly, I finished the book before the kids and I read it together, just so I could see what happened next. Abominable is a 2019 animated adventure film produced by DreamWorks Animation and Pearl Studio, written and directed by Jill Culton and co-directed by Todd Wilderman. It stars the voices of Chloe Bennet, Albert Tsai, Tenzing Norgay Trainor, Eddie Izzard, Sarah Paulson, and Tsai Chin. The film follows a teenage girl named Yi (Bennet) who encounters a young Yeti on the roof of her apartment building in Shanghai, names him Everest and embarks on an epic quest to reunite the magical creature with his family at the highest point on Earth along with her mischievous friends Jin (Trainor) and Peng (Tsai), but the trio of friends will have to stay one-step ahead of Burnish (Izzard), a wealthy man intent on capturing a Yeti, and zoologist Dr. Zara (Paulson) to help Everest get home.

This animated adventure is sweet and entertaining enough to keep viewers amused, and it shares a bit about Chinese culture and underlines the importance of family, friendship, and teamwork. Everest's story is reminiscent of several other films about kids/people who find, protect, and commune with an unusual animal/creature/alien, but the twist of setting the film in Shanghai provides a window into the universe of three Chinese kids. They live in a high-rise apartment building, can ride a motorbike, and know how to get around on their own -- just as you'd expect from teens in the most populated city in the world. Everest the yeti might be a mythical creature, but the teen characters don't just seem authentic --- they're all voiced by Asian actors or actors of Asian descent. (One bonus piece of trivia: Trainor, the voice of Jin, is the grandson of legendary climber Tenzing Norgay, who -- along with Sir Edmund Hillary -- was the first to summit Mt. Everest.)This tale about a family of yetis was a fun read, although I wouldn't have known it was an Eva Ibbotson story if her name wasn't on the cover. After being familiar with her characters being witches and talking ghosts, I guess yetis weren't too unusual, but the characters did feel a bit thin. My favourite character was Hubert the yak, whom I feel was the only character that showed development (ironic, as he doesn't talk).

Her family decided to go through with the publication after her death, and the book was edited for publication by her son Toby together with Ibbotson's editor.
