About this deal

I’ve gamed with both – and no real preference at the moment. I certainly don’t feel the K612 are diminished in any way for directional queues in FPS gaming, and the slightly warmer tone actually adds to the enjoyment. For the sound section, I will give one certain example per genre which will make my opinions more revealing. K702 are flat with slightly more bass roll-off (low bass), and a bigger peak in the upper mids/treble. K612 have slightly more bass (marginal), remain quite flat, and don’t have quite the same peak in the highs (a little ‘more polite’).

Below the CSD for the K612. The ‘grass’ between 1kHz and 4kHZ shown in the GD plot above seems caused by resonances.

I will say that again, the 612 may be a hair better for stuff like Jazz and Classical (for some), but it’s still pretty close at the end of the day.

AKG K612 Pro Studio Headphone Review - Sonarworks Blog

Still, one of the main reasons I use the 702 every day is because it handles everything really well and sounds fantastic to boot. Treble: These headphones have no particular spike in the treble. It's quite linear across the board, with roll off happening towards the 8-10,000 Hz range. You have to play REALLY badly mastered music for these headphones to sound sibilant. The treble is there, but it isn't forward, harsh or glarey. The K612s are't as dark as the K702 Annies, but are definitely are more forgiving than the K240s, which I find are rolled off in the lower treble but abruptly have a HUGE spike at the sibilance range that makes them piercingly painful with badly mastered music lest I EQ the treble down. There is a small (1.5dB) level matching difference between Left and Right driver between 20Hz and 1kHz but did not really detect it at all. It is there non-the-less and seems to be a driver variation difference. I re-measured it a few times, just to make sure. Hi-hats, cymbals, crashes, and specifically the delicate Jazz brush hits are all rendered effortlessly and with amazing Timbre; this allows you to listen for hours without fatigue. What is Timbre? The ‘sharp’ treble signature is completely gone and the headphone now has a warm character. I find it more pleasant, but the K612 still shows a ‘low quality’ treble which isn’t masked any more by it being elevated and sounds a bit ‘coarse’ as in not smooth. Build Quality: The K612 is a well-made headphone and feels solid in my hands. Only gripe is the cable isn't detachable but it's not really something I'm worried about as the cable quality is good and I take good care of my headphones. K612 PRO headphones are reference open, over-ear phones that deliver natural sound imaging for professional monitoring. The advanced open technology offers comfort for long working sessions and a full, spacious sound. AKG’s patented Varimotion™ diaphragm technology completes the unique sound of the K612 PRO. I love the energetic nature of the mid-range and feel as though it provides some much-needed liveliness vs. the sometimes duller 712 and 612. The K712’s mid-bass rises a bit more than the others and does sound more elevated across the board without coming across as unnatural.
