Writer, artist, and musician Brontez Purnell shares an unreleased sex column for Serpentine Podcast's Intimacies series. Nadia Joseph, a team member of New Beacon Books, reflects on her experience of the Pavilion and how it resonated with many aspects of her life. Closing times: 18:00 in April and May / 20:00 from June to August / 19:00 in September / Dusk from October to March The subject of this book, Charles Sobhraj, is confirmed to have taken the lives of over a dozen tourists throughout Asia in the 1970s. Don't worry about etiquette, I think swimmers are very welcoming. However, I asked the Royal parks dude to put up a bit more info for non-locals like us.

Serpentine: A short story from the world of His Dark

Dance with us as we celebrate some of the best music out of Africa in the last 50 years with No Signal. The Pavilion is built of reclaimed steel, cork and timber covered with micro-cement. The varying textures, hues of pink and brown are drawn directly from the architecture of London and reference changes in quality of light. Serpentine by Thomas Thompson tells the story of serial killer Charles Sobhraj, the notorious ‘Serpent’ or ‘bikini killer’ who preyed on Western tourists throughout the hippie trail of Southeast Asia during the 1970s. Joined by his band of ‘followers’ you could almost say that this murderer had a cult following, however, unlike Charles Manson, Charles Sobhraj was hands-on when it came to killing. One thing that neither the book or the mini-series can capture is all that has happened after 1977 when Sobhraj and lover, Marie-Andrée Leclerc, are finally captured and jailed. Once Interpol took the case things began to pop. They were wanted in various cities in at least six countries simultaneously. Descriptions and pictures, witnesses began to appear. On both days, the bird life on The Serpentine was obvious, but they seemed happier on Sunday, as there were more folk to feed them - including the swans. He was a co-founder and president in 1957 of Western Writers of America and later received two of that group’s Spur Awards for his writing. Thompson was a life member of the National Cowboy Hall of Fame."

Other times, I had to put the book down in disgust. But still, I soldiered on because I was reading a brilliantly written account of one of the most sociopathic, self-serving and evil conmen and murderer that’s ever walked this earth. For artist James Barnor, family and community were a constant source of inspiration in his photography. Family FOTO is an international family album inspired by Barnor’s Serpentine ex... Since its inception, the Pavilion has become an established home for Serpentine’s Live Programmes. This year the Pavilion will also host a specially commissioned sound programme Listening to the City that features work by artists including Ain Bailey and Jay Bernard, connecting visitors to the stories and sounds of selected London neighbourhoods. The design process has also extended into thinking through more equitable, sustainable and imaginative institutional structures by creating Support Structures for Support Structures, a grant and fellowship programme that supports artists who work in, support and hold communities in London through their work. Sobraj often surrounded himself with needy or vulnerable people who he used snd cajoled into helping him commit his crimes. Two of his most famous associates were Ajay Choudhry, an Indian career criminal who disappeared in 1976 and Marie-Andree Leclerq, a Quebecoise who he had seduced and who became his "wife" and partner in crime. Like his wife, Leclerq, or "Monique" as she was known, provided Sobraji with a veneer of respectability, and like many of his minions, she was loyal and desperately in love with him. He often hosted parties in his Bangkok home, where he met with the potential victims he had befriended. He had an unerring eye for weakness or vulnerability. The story of Charles Sobhraj, a charismatic murderer who killed as many as 12 people and robbed God-knows-how-many after drugging them. One of the most venerable places to have an outdoor splash about in London – the Serpentine Lido in Hyde Park – has finally reopened to swimmers for the summer this week. The Serpentine Lido is open from 10:00 am - 6:00 pm (last entry 5:30pm) every day in June, July and August. Thompson seems to be Charles Shobhraj's shadow during this entire episode of Charles' life. At times it seems he is deep within Charles to see his weaknesses, that seems to elude almost everyone, except Charles and Thompson. He was born in Texas and graduated from the University of Texas in 1955. He then worked as a reporter and editor at the Houston Press.
