About this deal

This book opens up to a trigger warning to it’s readers but I felt that KATHERENA VERMETTE handled the violence very well and although some of the details was hard to read at times, was very sad and depressing it is an important piece of Canadian culture and I really appreciated the author giving a voice to these indigenous Manitoban women. Jonah is your typical teenager. Minus the part where he breaks his bones for fun. He works, has a girlfriend-not-girlfriend and has a best friend who encourages his bone-breaking behaviour. Then there's Jesse, his brother with severe food allergies; Will, his baby brother that never stops crying; and his parents who always find something to fight about. All these characters were well written with their own quirks and problems. Though sometimes the characters may make you want to tear your hair out and curse them for staying in problematic relationships, these guys are teens. And teens are very good at not listening. Ideal for couples, our stylish apartments and hotel rooms can be found with woodland or lakeside views. They include:

This wasn’t a happy book and I wouldn’t say that I had a connection to any of these characters but I did have a connection to the story in a whole though and it did open up my eyes and showed me how it is to live in a neighborhood like the one described in this book. I appreciated that she put a voice to them. For that I have hope. However, the story doesn’t often step off the gas from its headlong blood-and-guts joke fest. As such, it didn’t often allow us moments to see its heroes in human moments. The plot was solidly constructed, and its settings interesting. The novel’s characters, though, were more archetypes than people, and the protagonist, Jeremiah Reid, felt like a bundle of inconsistencies. The "voice" in this book is exceptional. The pace of the story is fast and intense. One thing that I took away from this story was the devotion the brothers had for each other. Katherena Vermette is a Canadian writer, who won the Governor General's Award for English-language poetry in 2013 for her collection North End Love Songs. Vermette is of Metis descent and from Winnipeg, Manitoba. She was a MFA student in creative writing at the University of British Columbia. After a breakup, we often reflect on the things left unsaid. When Lydia is found dead in a lake, her parents are reeling from the loss and the pain of the things they never told their daughter. This book explores the challenges of trying to truly know someone and our struggle to understand one another.

When Stella, a young Métis mother, looks out her window one evening and spots someone in trouble on the Break — a barren field on an isolated strip of land outside her house — she calls the police to alert them to a possible crime.

Across town, a Metis family is torn apart. Something bad has happened. It is senseless, heinous and inconceivable. - Katherena Vermette, "Was in jener Nacht geschah" At the front of the book there is a "TRIGGER WARNING: This book is about recovering and healing from violence. Contains scenes of sexual and physical violence, and depictions of vicarious trauma." Numerous pop-culture references and in-jokes cut into the timelessness of the novel and broke immersion. Jeremiah’s voice felt like an attempt to combine the rugged lone survivor with the flippancy of Deadpool. This does provide a nice counterbalance to the typical intensity found in zombie media, but it does not do enough to take away from his character weaknesses and, more than once, furthered my dislike for Jeremiah.

She seems surprised. ‘If your husband is “on a break” from your marriage’ – she does the quotation marks with her fingers – ‘then aren’t you’ – more quotation marks – ‘“on a break” too?’ The twist with Naomi threw me for a loop. The whole story was set up such that she liked Jonah - she doesn't like seeing him with Charlotte even though she likes Charlotte, she wears his sweatshirt, she encourages him to break his bones, etc. So I didn't understand why she suddenly went for Jesse. Although this is fictitious, I was drawn into the drama and it felt "raw and real." I felt scared and helpless with Stella, and could emphasize with sisters Paulina and Louisa and their mother, Cheryl. I admired the young Metis policeman and could feel his frustration with his older partner. Give your family holiday that extra finishing touch by opting for a lodge with a hot tub. Fun for adults and children alike, unwind after a busy day of activity with a splash!I've always loved the place my girl calls the Break. I used to walk through it in the summer. There is a path you can go along all the way to the edge of the city, and if you just look down at the grass, you might think you were in the country the whole way. Old people plant gardens there, big ones with tidy rows of corn and tomatoes, all nice and clean. You can't walk through it in the winter though. No one clears a way. In the winter, the Break is just a lake of wind and white, a field of cold and biting snow that blows up with the slightest gust. And when snow touches those raw Hydro wires they make this intrusive buzzing sound. It's constant and just quiet enough that you can ignore it, like a whisper you know is a voice but you can't hear the words. And even though they are more than three stories high, when it snows those wires feel close, low, and buzz a sound that is almost like music, just not as smooth. You can ignore it, it's just white noise, and some people can ignore things like that. Some people hear it and just get used to it.

In some ways the novel is a study in perspective, as the pair move between intimacy and distance. However, for Amy it’s enough to send her – along with her extended family of gossips, misfits and troublemakers – teetering over the edge. Thank you so much to Edelweiss, House of Anansi Press, and Katherena Vermette for the opportunity to read a copy of this book in exchange for a review. Despite the horror of the assault, and the uncomfortable matters discussed, the book helped me gain a better understanding of the discrimination First Nations people face, and the generational trauma that appears impossible to escape. So despite the whole thing being slightly convenient, it's a great story with tons of action. The pacing is great. Just about the time you think things are going to be fine, they go crazy again. This main character has guts, I'll give him that! He also seems to know how to do a lot of things that he otherwise wouldn't have in his life before the apocalypse. Still, this disbelief is easy to suspend in light of the fact that he's had a couple of years to learn how to adapt. Some people just do well with that.
