The problem with having your event be a success in its first year is that your expectations for year two are evenhigher and so is your stress level! Afrori Books& The Feminist Bookshophave teamed up to create an exciting new community book festival aimed at making the marginalised mainstream. So, we have a whole evening on 22 nd June dedicated to Windrush. We have food, DJ, an exhibition, actors and of course authors. But truly the VIP guests will be our senior Caribbean citizens who will be telling their stories of triumphs and heartbreaks for that time. As a Windrush descendant this event sits close to my heart and my own dad and mum will be among the VIPs.I know that the book festival will be a delight for all of the attendees, but for those who cannot make it, I hope it will make you see marginalised people, advocate for them, make space for them and remind you to be the change that you want to see. Hello and welcome to the Brighton Book Club. This is a group for all bookworms and avid readers, whatever your preferred choice of fiction. We meet on the first Wednesday of every month. Floor to ceiling, bookshelves offer everything from feminist theory, to graphic novels, the latest diverse YA reads. They support and promote self-identifying female and non-binary writers, creatives and entrepreneurs and their regular events mean you can become part of the community. Wonderful birthday early dinner before theatre. The set menu was wonderful value, the Cloud dessert was incredible. Just the best service as ever, even discreetly moving our table when the dinners in the next table became a bit loud.

It really does take so much work to make this happen and I know that despite all the laughter we have had over this last 9 months there has also been a lot of late nights and long days to make it all come together. Not to mention those 5 days in June being the longest five days ever. With the south-coastal city of Brighton being a hub of UK art and culture, as well as a loudly and proudly queer city, it’s no wonder that so many independent bookshops can be found in the wonderful city of Brighton.
