There is now more outsole rubber on the medial side of the midsole to give the Ghost 14 more medial support since the medial side of the midsole has been changed to a softer DNA Loft. The Ghost 14 does ride ever so slightly softer than the Ghost 13 but it’s negligible. If the Ghost 13 is a 6/10 in terms of softness, the Ghost 14 is a 6.25. The new headline feature of the Ghost 14 is that it now has a full DNA Loft midsole compared to the 13 that only had a half DNA Loft midsole. The Brooks Ghost is one of the best-selling running shoes year after year because it delivers a straightforward neutral ride and generous fit. This year, Brooks updated the Brooks Ghost to feature their DNA Loft foam throughout the midsole so you can float through your next run. I enjoyed it most on steady-paced runs, slightly faster than easy pace, between 4.50 and 5.30 minutes per kilometre.

Brooks designers kept the snug, engineered mesh upper and dialed in the fit through the midfoot with a new lacing system.Along with the updated 3D Fit Print technology, the Ghost 14 improves the fit throughout the heel collar for a secure feeling. Our reviewers loved the snug feel of the padded tongue and cushioned heel collar. Should you upgrade? Only if you didn’t like the rigid underfoot feel in the 12 and wish it was wider and lighter. Comfort amplified in Brooks Ghost 13 Also, because the Ghost 12 primarily had cushioning in the heel, it made it a great shoe for heel strikers. The extension of the DNA Loft cushioning to the forefoot in the Ghost 13 allows for a smoother transition which makes this shoe a great choice for any runner no matter their foot strike pattern. OUR VERDICT The Ghost 14 is far from an exciting daily trainer but it's a dependable workhorse that has the perfect balance of long-distance cushioning and ride stability. It excels on long-distances and steady-paced runs. I wear out Ghost 13 in about 4 months for walking 2.5/miles daily; wearing out 4 pairs (Size 8 Narrow) for sure.

My first run was an 11 km easy run and there were no big surprises. It felt like a typical Ghost: smooth, stable and consistent. The premium tongue gusset is only featured on the top of the range Glycerin.

The Ghost has an enormous, loyal fan base. It’s a certain type of runner who buys the Ghost every year: the type of runner who doesn’t like taking risks when it comes to running shoes. S-257 Cushsole is a midsole compound used as an insole to deliver even more cushioning and flexibility. There’s nothing wrong with a Margherita: it’s a proven flavour combination and it goes down well. You won’t get a funky-tasting processed sausage or cheap, frozen seafood on your Margherita.
