Our technicians can provide a rapid diagnosis and a clear estimate where we describe the faults found and the steps needed to get your camera fixed. If your Canon camera is showing an err error code, or if your images are not as sharp as they used to be we’ll get to the bottom of it. All digital photos require some sharpening, and it's a definite requirement for 450D owners. We don't regard this as a fatal flaw, however, as anyone who goes to the expense of buying an SLR should try shooting in RAW for maximum, uncompressed quality. I tested the EOS 450D with the new EFS 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS kit lens, which offers the same range as the standard lens shipped with the 400D but crucially adds image stabilisation. This is important for Canon, as competitors like Sony, Olympus and Pentax all offer image stabilisation in their DSLRs. The difference between Canon (and Nikon) and the others is that Sony, Olympus and Pentax have opted for stabilisation via the camera body, rather than the lens, which therefore works with their entire range of lenses. Canon's system is obviously limited by which lenses you choose, but it does offer the slight advantage of showing the stabilising effect through the viewfinder. Canon and Nikon also claim that a lens-based anti-shake system is inherently better too, but the jury's out on that one. My review of the EOS 450D was delayed by a malfunctioning EFS 18-55mm lens which refused to auto-focus properly, despite the camera claiming otherwise. Thankfully the second one actually worked, and the image stabilisation is undoubtedly a real boon for low-light photography. The EOS 450D doesn’t compete with other manufacturers’ entry-level models on price, so it has to beat them on image quality and performance. Therefore it makes little sense to me to hamstring what is a very good camera by pairing it with a substandard lens. Doing so still doesn’t make the 450D cheaper than the Nikon D60, and compromises its one real advantage over its competitors. Still, I’m sure Canon knows what it’s doing far better than I do. The Canon EOS 450D (also known as the Digital Rebel XSi) is the successor to the popular EOS 400D DSLR camera, and it offers a number of significant improvements that Canon hope will fight off the ever-increasing competition. The inevitable resolution increase, from 10 to 12 megapixels, is present and correct, but perhaps more exciting is the addition of Live View, with not one but two different modes including contrast detection AF, similar to that used by the Panasonic DMC-L10. The EOS 450D / Digital Rebel XSi also features a larger 3 inch LCD screen, new 9-point AF system, 14-bit processing, spot metering, SD cards instead of CompactFlash, and a 3.5fps continuous mode. There's even a new kit lens, the EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS, which should help dispel some of the criticism aimed at Canon for not offering an affordable image stabilisation solution. The 450D is more expensive than its predecessor, which is now being offered as a budget option. Mark Goldstein found out if the Canon EOS 450D can beat both the 400D and its main rivals... Compare PricesUnsurprisingly the performance in Live View mode is nowhere near as good, taking around two seconds per picture and with most shots being out of focus. The EOS Integrated Cleaning System combats sensor dust in three important ways: Reduce, Repel and Remove.

The first thing that strikes you about the 450D is how small and light it is. It measures 128.8 x 97.5 x 61.9 mm and weighs approximately 475g body-only, slightly larger but 35g lighter than the EOS 400D. It is also 20g lighter than the Nikon D60 and over 50g lighter than Sony’s A200. The camera body is plastic, and unfortunately the low weight does lend it an air of flimsiness which is largely unwarranted by the actual build quality. The plastic is a little thin in places, but overall the camera is quite sturdy. As for the new Live View feature, it's certainly useful. Live View makes it easier to compose still life, for example, or arrange a portrait shot without constantly squinting through the viewfinder. Focus calibration is a term that can mean something different to almost everyone you ask but we all know what we want: Pin sharp images. At Fixation we offer two distinct services to improve your Canon auto-focus accuracy.on the well-positioned dial, but it's annoying that you have to hold down the Exposure Compensation button to change the aperture in Manual mode, rather than just press it once to toggle between shutter speed and aperture. The 450D also features an integrated sensor cleaning system, which employs anti-static materials and a vibrating filter layer to shake off dust particles. All the major DSLR manufacturers have similar systems, and Canon’s appears to work as well as any of the others. I noticed no problems with sensor contamination while I was testing the camera. Live view is activated by pressing the Set button in the centre of the D-pad, which flips the reflex mirror up and activates the image sensor, providing a through-the-lens view on the monitor screen. Unfortunately this means that the main autofocus sensors, which are mounted in the viewfinder light-path cannot be used. To compensate for this the 450D has a secondary contrast-detection AF system, but it is very slow and not terribly reliable, especially in low light. This unfortunately means that shooting in Live View mode is really not practical unless the focus is fixed, such as shooting in a studio with the camera on a tripod.
