STAR WARS: DOCTOR APHRA OMNIBUS VOL. 2 - Penguin Random House

Breaking Ultimate Universe News at New York Comic Con! Children of the Vault! | CBH Live! October 20, 2023Star Wars: DOCTOR APHRA 23 on Penguin Random House Comics (archived from the original on May 8, 2022) Chelli Aphra is an archaeologist. You might think this means uncovering precious artifacts for the sake of preservation and knowledge but you’d be wrong. With an interest in droids, weapons, and Jedi artifacts she’s just looking for credits. When her talents attract the attention of Darth Vader it sets her life and that of two killer robots on a path that sees her kidnapping rebels, imprisoned in imperial jail, fighting for her life with a droid that wishes to kill her, and even going to the Emperor himself. To save her own skin Aphra is ready to betray anyone which always begs the question, what sort of crazy trouble will she be in next? No one is safe from the prime directive in her life [to save her own skin] and, even as the betrayals become the expected norm of each episode, it’s still fun to discover the particular manner of mischief Doctor Aphra has cooked. Worst Among Equals Aphra and her deranged murderbot are fixed with a couple of explosive devices that force them to work together while broadcasting their flight to all the bounty hunters on their trail

She's kind of fun but at the same time, there's a really dark heart to her ... All those weird kind of contradictions to her, I think they're quite appealing. At the same time, she's got a very core thing people can get. She's quite complicated and not complicated at all. With Luke or Leia, they've got that core archetype you get, you get what they're like. You get that with Aphra but at the same time, there's an underlying ... all this weird, twisted stuff in there that kind of gets under people's skin." [7]

All in all, this omnibus reminds us that in times of war and oppression, we all have different roles that we fill. Whether some are a part of the problem, actively fighting against it or standing on the side lines, everyone has a role. Aphra’s role is a bit murky at best because she doesn’t become vulnerable with many of the characters within the story. Perhaps this is why so many people love her – she is the most relatable. During this very real life time of confusion and uprising, we have to ask ourselves – where do we fit in in the struggle for freedom? It can be hard to take on the world’s problems as an individual and I believe that is where Aphra gets it right. Does it save your life to be self-serving or is it worth the risk to sacrifice yours for the betterment of society?
