An interesting mechanic of the game is the use of cheese tokens. These are used by characters to level up, share with teammates and use special abilities. Enemies also use cheese by adding it to the ‘cheese wheel’. This speeds up the game and spawns more enemies.

The campaign mode is essentially a dungeon crawl game (there is also a skirmish mode which is more like a fighting game) you get to play through a campaign that happens right after the destruction of the Death Star. One player plays as the Galactic Empire, while the other players get to play as heroes in the Rebel Alliance. Unlike other dungeon crawl board games – items in Gloomhaven are never destroyed (technically you can reset the board – although this would be difficult and I’ve never had the need to do this). The app here really does two major things: enhances the horror game's atmosphere through audio and descriptive text, and simplifies setup and bookkeeping. The rest is pure exploration, action management, teamwork and combat. Also, spookies. The gameplay of doom is similar to Gloomhaven in that it is an initiative-based combat – the Invader prepares the enemies of the mission who the marines will fight off and the marines use action cards to fight off the demons. Ten years after the original Claustrophobia board game came out comes the “1643” version. Stakes were high as it seemed impossible to improve on that game, but they have done it. This is a little different than the other best dungeon crawler board games in that it is 2 player versus game than a group taking on the perils of a game. One team is the humans trying to complete quests and the other are the demons trying to stop them.Claustrophobia 1643 is an unusual dungeon-crawler. Most games in the genre are cooperative, or at least include a team of players. Claustrophobia 1643 is for just two players, and they compete head to head. One controls a small team of adventurers and the other controls a horde of monsters. Doesn't stat boxed till strategic review 4, while other items like EPT& D&D, etc do from the get go. (not sure though if its the more description early on that prevents this or that there was no box at the inital release.) Players have to play and progress the story and their characters through the different scenarios in the game to find out whether the demons will win and destroy all humanity, or if the religious warriors will save the day. Like the video game – DOOM immerses players (marines) into a huge battle against hordes of demons who (like Descent) are controlled by one player called ‘The invader’. Dungeon! is a dungeon crawler with ties to the very beginning of Dungeons & Dragons. It's a competitive game that pits players against one another in a race to recover treasure. It actually has a lot of concepts in common with early D&D. Players dive into dungeons for profit, not heroism.

It’s a game built for the whole family with enough depth to keep the adults engaged but uncomplicated enough that kids as young as 6 can keep up (though we’d say this game would typically be enjoyed by children of about 8 years and older). It also leans nicely into the dungeon-crawling and looting of the classic D&D experience making it a nice segway into the universe.Hemmings, Fred (December 1977 – January 1978). "Open Box". White Dwarf. No.4. Games Workshop. pp.13–14.

There are multiple paths this narrative can take, with choices to be made along the way, making each pathway unique to your playthrough. We all love replayability in board games, and Arcadia Quest has that in spades. Once you’ve reached the end and reclaimed Arcadia, you’re more than welcome to start again on a brand new dungeon-crawling expedition. Descent: Journeys in the Dark (Second Edition)– A classic dungeon crawler game where you are four heroes pitched against an overlord who is trying to stop them. The system is what Star Wars: Imperial Assault is based on, but if you aren’t a Star Wars fan this is a great alternative. The idea behind the game is that the players play as investigators who travel together through the haunted mansions of Arkham searching for answers, collecting weapons, tools and information all while fighting monsters and the urge to go insane.Gloomhaven is by far my favorite dungeon crawler board game. The game is based on a personal Dungeons & Dragons campaign that was so good the players decided to turn it into a board game. The first edition of the game was released in 2005 and was immensely popular with gamers. The game has progressed into the second edition which essentially streamlines the game and the rules. The game is driven by a smartphone app which makes set up very fast and helps to set the atmosphere of the game by immersing the players into their characters. That 10 different versions and I thought there was only 9 so maybe 3rd print doesn't exist but I think it really does.
