Lastly, the “V.2” indicates the series has had an upgrade, so you now have more amp choices because there are now 5 additional alternatives. The V2 models carry additional tonal shifting options mostly. Although it requires a PC to get the most out of it (and hence knowing a thing or two about editing software), beginners can still dial great tones by simply selecting a preset or an amp voice. In addition to the 17 amps, there are 44 available effects split into four categories. The categories are: Stompbox (typical pedal style effects such as overdrive, distortion, compressors and wahs), Modulation (such as chorus, flanger, tremolo, pitch shifter and filters), Delay (a few different types of delay such as ping-pong, tape, reverse, stereo) and Reverb (small hall, large hall, plate, ambient, spring). The Stompbox effects are only accessible through the Fender FUSE software so if you don’t connect your amp to your PC/Mac, you will only be able to adjust the other three categories of effects.

The good news is the factory presets are actually pretty good, so you’ll be better off creating new ones. As for the modeled amps, you’ll find great tones on the Fender voices. You can dial-in Fender’s signature tones from its 8’’ speakers and their different vintage amp-voice alternatives. Its 20 watts of digital power gives you plenty of output to play for around 30 people. It can also give you enough voltage to rehearse with your band in your garage or home studio. The controls on the Mustang are knob-driven and on top of the amp. It has a single knob each for Gain, Volume, Treble, Bass, and Master. The Preset Select has a preset that you can dial through, and some effects are under master headings called Modulation Select and Delay/Reverb Select. The amp models light up individual LEDs for each model type. The control panel features a Treble knob to control the high frequencies and a bass knob to control the lows, but there is no Middle knob to control over the mid-range. It may seem a bit confusing at first. However, you will get used to it in no time. Where most modeling amps model, well, different amplifiers, the Peavey Vypyr VIP models different kinds of amplifiers. Consider one of my favorite modeling amps on the market today: the Fender Mustang series. These amps are hands down the most versatile modeling amps I’ve … Peavey Vypyr VIP 1...None of this matters if it doesn’t sound great, and unfortunately… that was our biggest gripe with the Fender Mustang. The Mustang I is less likely to suffer damage for its small and light. So, overall, there won’t be any issues with the amp or the software. Why should you get a Mustang I V2? Another thing to note is that changing the original presets might not be the best idea. Tweaking the knobs can have a huge difference in the factory presets because they were programmed outside of the amp. That means there’s a distinction between the original programming of the amp and how each knob truly works. Construction-wise, this amp is neither too heavy nor too light. It can survive a few falls nonetheless as it’s a well-made device.

The amp looks great and unique. It obviously resembles some of Fender’s most classic amps, and this is a very creative choice of design. It looks a lot better than other practice amps in this category in my opinion, and it absolutely fits within Fender’s amp catalog.

These tiny little tube-driven heads have 20 watts of solid-state power, so there’s plenty of clean headroom for home use. The only catch is you have to hook it up to a cabinet for it to work. Out of all of the practice amps I’ve seen, this is my favorite. Not only does it offers a great variety of choices, but it does so in an easy manner. There are 24 fully customizable factory presets that can all be accessed right on the amp. There are three banks of eight presets. You can see which bank you’re on by looking at the color of the LED light. Green = bank 1, Orange = bank 2, and Red = bank 3. The quality of this amp surprised me. I’ve heard quite a few budget amps before as my students often bring their amps into lessons for me to explain how to use them. Quite often the tone sounds cheap (eg: I have vivid memories of hearing the then-new Marshall MG series and the ridiculously horrible sounds it spat out). The quality of this amp was a pleasant surprise. The effects were actually very high quality and very surprising. Quite often budget amps have poor sounding effects that feel very digital. The effects with the Mustang were actually very usable. The preset selection is made up of eight amp models, each with three presets for a total of 24 presets in all. You can directly save 24 presets on the amp, but you can also use the Fender FUSE software to add another 12 presets. Overall, you can save up to 36 presets. As an amp suitable for beginners, the range of effects and presets it offers is huge, compared to other models. Amp Model

If that's not enough for you, it is also possible to store more on your PC, which brings us nicely onto ... This is very common with these smaller practice amps. The same criticism is often levied at the Line 6 Spider range. All the time and effort goes into cramming it full of features, but not bothering to make the speaker actually sound adequate. This is usually the reason why I tell people to save a little longer and buy a Boss Katana 50, which has a ton of features and houses a decent 12″ speaker. What this means is the Mustang is very portable and has the perfect size for your room, garage, or living room. The bright fender tone you would expect to hear is present, until you start altering the settings and dialling in some of the amp models that is! The extensibility of this amp also makes it great for getting started with digital recording. In fact, one user review alluded to the fact that this is more of a 'guitar system' than an amplifier. DisadvantagesFurthermore, you can further tweak each effect to achieve the sounds you want. So, for example, if you choose an overdrive, you can adjust the level, gain, high, mid, and low. The knobs look similar to the UFO-shaped knobs found on the Silverface amps. These knobs are sturdy and feel nice to turn. Not too light, not too heavy, just right. Finding quality effects on this amp was also quite surprising as most of its competitors on the same price range have poor sounding effects that feel too digital and destroy the original signal of your guitar. Mustang’s effects are very usable. However, if you’re going for the Mustang II, IV or V, that means you’re going for a gig-ready amp, and an additional footswitch will give you plenty of extra versatility as you play live and change presets in-between songs. If you’re looking at a Mustang III, IV or V, then the answer is yes. This is due mostly because the v.1 versions of those amps had a bug that is know as “FIZZ” among their grumpy owners. V.2 solves the FIZZ problem.
