It's not open at all on the sides - there are slits on the sides to poke your arms out, but your arms would get pretty wet if you used poles.

As low tech as that pancho was, it worked incredibly well and exceeded my expectations. If I can replace it with something lighter, it will certainly go with me on Spring or Fall Caminos.
