About this deal

To recap, here are just some of the main points in the video, which should keep your filter running smoothly. Take Care of Your Hoses One of the most common problems with the FX6 filter is that after cleaning the FX6 will not startup. We bought a Fluval fx6 for our Roma 240 tank we will be making into a planted tank - hopefully giving us more than enough flow rate.

FX Series - Fluval Aquatics UK

Make your way through the different bio trays, and get to the bottom tray where you will find charcoal padding or any chemical media you were using depending upon your preferences. It is recommended to change these depending on their respective state. If they are too dirty or greasy, toss them in the trash and get clean replacements. Now that you know when to clean your aquarium with an FX6 filter, it is time to learn how to clean FX6. Here are a few steps to get you started with cleaning your FX6.At the moment there's 2 plastic screw points to screw the pipes into which then connect to the tubing - infact looking at it - wouldn't surprise me if the holes are big enough once the plastic bits are off - just to work out how to get bigger pipes through and watertight! Now, you will take out the sponges and clean them with CANISTER water. If you clean this with tap water, you will harm the integrity of beneficial bacteria that are useful for your filter and the tank. Ensure that you get the gunk off these sponges and clean them with canister water. However, you can take care of the sponge baskets with clean tap water. These are only meant to keep the sponges in place. Cross sectional area of 1" pipe is (25.4/2)*(25.4/2)*3.14 -> 500mm2. 16mm pipe is 200mm2. Thus a flow reduction of over a half (0.4) !!. This a major restriction and I think you will find the FX6 says don't run the filter at less than half flow as well.

FX6 Canister Filter, up to 400 US Gal / 1500 L - Fluval

Designed for aquariums up to 1500 L (330 UK gallons), FX6 is the high-capacity workhorse of Fluval’s canister line-up, enhanced with all the power and reliability you’ve come to expect from a high-performance filter. Features: If you wonder, “How often do you clean your FX6?” the answer, unfortunately, is that every tank is different. But if you are running carbon through your system, you should definitely be replacing that every month. Otherwise, in general, most tanks can wait for four months before going for a full FX6 cleaning session. The issue we are having is our tank is drilled in the bottom and has 22m hoses whilst the fx6 hoses are I Beleve 1" - along with that our inline heater and co2 atomizer need the 22m hose. Other than bio load, water conditions inside the tank also help you determine the right time to clean your FX6. If the water appears to be blurry or whiteish rather than transparent, it is time to get busy and clean the tank. The absence could mean a higher bio load and foreign contaminants in your tank that need to be taken care of immediately. Crystal Clear Water Does Not Mean Optimal Water Parameters

So, all the waste in your tank falls under the category of bio load. This waste helps you determine the right time for cleaning your tank with water changes and gravel vacs and helps you set a proper cleaning schedule for your Fluval FX6 Canister. Ok will scrap the idea of using smaller pipes then - there's no point in spending all that money on the filter to more than half its flow. As with most fish tank equipment noise is one of the most common complaints and the FX6 is no different. Hiya. I asked Hagen themselves as I too have an FX6 coming today for my Fluval. Here is their response:

Make a template, peice of wood with same sized hole as you are drilling and silicone it in place if you can't clamp it. This stops the hole cutter slipping when you start the cut. The intake is Too close to air stone, filter or protein skimmer – Remove all air producing equipment to be sure they are not the reason. If they are the source of the problem try to keep the intake as far away as possible from the air source. If not possible try to create barriers between the air source and intake.Apart from flow rate is there any other reasons we shouldn't do this - could restricting the flow rate damage the filter for example?
