Verdict Once you get used to the unusual feel, they’re fine, and they don’t make your ears hot like some leather pads. The Helm Audio Bolt is my daily driver with my iPhone and both headphones really liked the control and midrange warmth that the tiny Dongle DAC can deliver. The HiFiMan HE400se has better resolution than the SR80x, and definitely reproduces a much larger sounding soundstage. The story of the SR80x holds a special place in not only our ears, but the ears of hundreds of thousands of listeners. The first pair was built in 1991 and we wouldn’t be here today without it. With its soundstage, world renowned mid-range, and speed, the SR80x is worthy of being the longest running Grado headphone. Signature Sound

Their headphones sound as good as they look with their retro-cool build. However, unknown to some, Grado is actually highly modifiable because of its DIY modular nature. The second camp is the “ tone wood” supporter. Much like a musical instrument, a particular material is selected for its interaction with the driver, in an effort to find a positive synergy, where the final sound produced is greater than the sum of its individual parts. Resonance and reflection of materials are believed to affect the timbre of the music reproduction.

Both headphones deliver a wonderful degree of bite with horns and this fantastic album pushed both in regard to top end extension and clarity. Are we getting only metal casing, or significantly better sound with the SR325x?Hasn’t that been the case ever since the 80 and 325 were available? For my limited use, I find the earlier SR80e to be great, and the quirky design is appealing too. The L Cush pads open things up a bit, both in treble and soundstage but they’re not as comfortable. They’re really just imperfect circumaural pads in disguise. I don’t know anybody who keeps their ears on those pads. Everybody hides their earlobe inside, which means that part of your ear is pressed up against the plastic grill. That gets painful. I knew the house would still be asleep so I found my favorite spot on the office sofa and curled up with a copy of American Tabloid and the Grado SR80x headphones connected to my iPhone 6S — I need both a 3.5mm and Apple Lightning connector for headphones and Dongle DACs. They are ideal for CLASSICAL listening, providing a warm, rounded satisfying sound picture, but with plenty of detail, whether in the overlapping vocal lines of Andrea Gabrieli’s (sixteenth-century) choral music, or in the glittering orchestral accompaniment to Szymanowski’s Second Violin Concerto (twentieth century - with flashes of percussion coming through the texture to brilliant effect).
