Screenwriter Daniel Waters was inspired to write the film Heathers after seeing a need for “a darker, more epic, cynical, satirical approach” to teen movies. Directed by Michael Lehmann, the film premiered in the US on March 31, 1989 featuring Winona Ryder (Veronica), Shannen Doherty (Heather Duke), Kim Walker (Heather Chandler), Lisanne Falk (Heather McNamara), and Christian Slater (J.D.). While The Hollywood Reporter’s David Rooney and The New York Times’ Ben Brantley also felt the show missed the mark, they noted the musical’s appeal to a young audience.
