About this deal

Your signal strength is fine. I believe there is a problem that affects the 9150/9300 on certain channels and I think Film4 is one of them. The rear panel is even more interesting. The most significant addition is HDMI output, which offers a clean all-digital connection to your flat-panel TV and allows you to upscale Freeview pictures to 720p, but strangely not 1080i. It’s taken a while for HDMI to make its way to the Freeview PVR market but with Humax and Topfield leading the way, others are sure to follow suit.

However, there are restrictions – if you’re recording two channels on different multiplexes, then you can only watch a third channel if it’s on the same multiplex as one of the channels being recorded. But if you’re recording two channels on the same multiplex, then you can watch a third channel from any multiplex. It sounds complicated, but trust us, it’s a very useful feature. Colours are vivid and accurate, edge stability is first-rate and setting recordings is brilliantly simple, thanks to an easy-to-understand seven-day EPG.

OK, I obviously don't understand the theory behind this. If I do a full format using my laptop, then the Humax does it's own, won't that undo any good work the full format has done? My post also specifically states that re-flashing the firmware was irrelevant to the process - its just where technical support pointed me to - and then I worked out what was on the disk and decided that the best way to see if it was going to be serviceable was whether it could be formatted. It just seemed to be a major shame that this very good PVR should be rendered totally dysfunctional by a relatively simple and not uncommon HDD failure and then for the solution from tech support being return your box for an exchange unit either paid or free...... Yes. Fit the new drive, power the box up, it will notice the new drive and offer to format it; less than five seconds later the job will be done. I've just seen a related thread where this was said (by someone who bought a new hard drive and installed it, as is, in the pvr):

Other channels like Dave and Sky News come and go all the time. One week I have them, the next week I don't. If you want to save your existing recordings it may be difficult because I believe that you can't just copy them off the HDD by inserting the HDD in a caddy and connecting it to a PC etc as they are encrypted, so you would have to overcome that as well. OK, my Humax is still hopping and skipping so I thought I'd try a full format. I'm thinking of this adapter, is it OK?A new aerial is under consideration and presumably I need to go for more high-gain directionality toward Winter Hill. With the picture quality and ease of use of the award-winning PVR9200T, but with twice the hard-drive size, the addition of an HDMI output capable of delivering upscaled pictures to make the most of your flatscreen TVs, and some truly useful new recording options this new Humax would make a fantastic upgrade to an existing freeview box.
