Overall, the Core i5 shows excellent power consumption readings during our tests. It peaks at 471W during our Adobe Premiere test, which is the lowest of any of the CPUs we tested for comparison. Intel's Core i5 pulls slightly more power in the Cinebench test than the competing Ryzen 7 7700X, but it also performs slightly better in that test, which makes this a rather mixed result. This looks like nothing more than a repeat of CPU Pricing and Value. In other words, just a way to give Intel another win. The Ryzen processors offer nearly the same performance as the 13600K in single-threaded applications, but the 13600K takes an 8.5% lead over the Ryzen 7 7700X and an 18.7% lead over the Ryzen 5 7600X in threaded applications, granting it the win in productivity apps. The increased power draw has an effect, though — the 7700X and 7600X have a 105W TDP rating and a max power draw of 142W, the highest power consumption of the Ryzen 7 and 5 chips yet.It's also much higher than the previous-gen’s 65W TDP rating. The Ryzen chips are designed to use the full thermal headroom available to deliver more performance, so they can safely operate at 95C under heavy load. We don’t see that much with the Ryzen 7 and 5 models, though. When it comes to building the perfect gaming rig, you need a motherboard that will let your Core i5 13600K processor reach its full potential. To make sure you have the best possible setup, we set out to compare and contrast some of the top motherboards on the market. Pricing: Intel Core i5-13600K vs AMD Ryzen 7 7700X and Ryzen 5 7600X Both Ryzen 7000 and Raptor Lake's modern connectivity technologies bring big increases in throughput via DDR5 memory and PCIe 5.0 interfaces, but Intel also chose to continue to support DDR4 memory to offer a less-expensive path for builders. Meanwhile, AMD's decision to support only DDR5 has proven to be a pricing pain point. These wins, however, were slim, and the Core i5-14600K and the Core i5-13600K tied for first place against the faster and more expensive competition in all of the other tests. This suggests that so long as you have a graphics card on the level of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 or anything slower, you really have no need to buy any of these faster and more costly processors for gaming and gaming alone. They're mainly relevant from a pure-gaming perspective if you're trying to compete in the upper echelon of esports with a high-refresh monitor and a top-end video card like the GeForce RTX 4090. (Of course, you might want the extra CPU horsepower for other non-gaming tasks, which is a whole other matter.) The Core i5-14600K and the Core i5-13600K will do just fine. So this way you'll get more accurate results on how the CPU actually performs., narrowing the bias and other factors involved which could impact the accuracy of these benchmarks.

Raptor Lake consumes more power than Alder Lake, but it is also much faster than its predecessor, earning it some leeway. Nevertheless, as we see in our renders-per-day measurements, AMD still holds the advantage in efficiency and all key power criteria. Intel's system consumes more power, resulting in higher thermal output. Intel's Core i5-13600K's IGP does demonstrate a modest performance gain over its direct predecessor in most tests, but it is outpaced by the Core i9-13900K's IGP in all tests. The one exception where the Core i5-13600K performs slower than the Core i5-12600K is in Tomb Raider, which appears to stress the CPU more. This enables the Core i5-12600K to pull ahead, not because it has the fastest CPU in the bunch, but because its slower CPU doesn’t get quite as hot, allowing the IGP to run better, with more thermal headroom. Power Consumption & ThermalsIn three out of six games I've tested, the Core i5 13600K matches the pace of the Core i9 12900K. In one of those three, it actually outperforms the Core i9 chip. That's Civ 6, which admittedly has become a bit of a cakewalk for the latest generation of processors from Intel and AMD. But it's no less an excellent showing for the far cheaper CPU. All in all, the Core i5-14600K did exactly as we expected in testing, matching the Core i5-13600K in almost every way. However, the difference is so slim as to leave us questioning why we would recommend it over the previous generation. We can’t really see any advantage to owning the Core i5-14600K over the Core i5-13600K, and we actually can see some disadvantages to it.

The big concern we have here: The climbing price of Core i5 processors will also likely mean budget-friendly options released further down the road will also cost more. This is a trend we have seen far too much of in recent years, and Intel certainly isn’t alone here, but that doesn’t counter our disappointment at this generational price increase. The system is powered by a SilverStone DA850 850-watt power supply and built into a Praxis Wetbench open-air chassis with a 1TB NVMe PCIe 4.0 SSD. All tests were performed inside of Windows 11 with the latest Windows updates. The ROG Maximus Z790 HERO’s VRM design includes 20 individual power stages for delivering the i5-13600K a lot of power. In addition, the heat generated by such an outstanding VRM design (and the associated PWM fan headers and huge aluminum heat sinks) is likely eliminated thanks to the amazing design. Truthfully, I cherish the Core i5 13600K. This is what a gamer needs, appropriately fast and reasonably affordable. The new processor will undoubtedly deliver on many fronts and then has some extra reserve. It'll be fun to tweak with, and offers great gam...Finally, the pricing advantage of DDR4 is simply too much to ignore, especially with lower-tier systems in this price range. While the premium for DDR5 has receded, you’ll still pay up to twice as much for a DDR5 kit as for DDR4, and AMD doesn't support the latter. For Raptor Lake, the slim performance advantage of DDR5 certainly doesn’t justify the extra price for DDR4, at least not for most users. Additionally, perhaps the best memory kit is the one you don’t have to buy — many upgraders likely already have a DDR4 kit, which is a plus. AMD's Ryzen 7000 still holds the advantage in all power consumption metrics, including peak power and efficiency, resulting in more forgiving cooling requirements and a cooler and quieter system. However, AMD has increased its power consumption significantly with this generation, so the advantage isn't as pronounced as we've seen in the past. CPU Pricing and Value: Intel. No problems wit this. Though with the recent price cuts, It's probably a tie. It’s also notable that the Core i5-13600K has 24MB of L3 cache, 4MB more than the Core i5-12600K. That’s in addition to 20MB of L2 cache, which is slightly more than double the 9.5MB of L2 cache found on the Core i5-12600K. Drivers and Software: Intel. Not sure what this is supposed to even mean. I do know I've never seen AMD win or tie in it though so it seems it's there just to get another win. Both are generally just fine with the occasional problem now and then. I'd call it a tie. Though the Core i5-12600K is the direct predecessor of the Core i5-13600K, this new processor lines up closer in spec to the Core i7-12700K, which is closer in core count, cache amount, and power limit. Comparing AMD’s AM4 processors to Intel’s new Raptor Lake processors is difficult, as the two companies now use very different designs but price-wise, the AMD Ryzen 7 7700X costs a fair deal more than the Core i5-13600K.
