About this deal

I’m excited to experiment with the double barrel aging process used to create Jim Beam Double Oak,” said Fred Noe, 7th Generation Master Distiller, Jim Beam. “Secondary aging delivers an added complexity to the taste profile and that makes for a unique, premium bourbon experience. Palate: Subtly peppery/oak-y at first. Soon enough, waves and waves of vanilla ice cream bring balance to the palate. A few touches of fruity malt. Today, it’s all about Jim Beam Double Oak vs Woodford Reserve Double Oaked. Jim Beam Double Oak Bourbon As the First Family of Bourbon, we were there when it all began. But we’ve never been the type to rest on our laurels. Always innovating, always taking bourbon to new heights—this is the Jim Beam way. On our 225-year anniversary, we have no intention of doing things any differently. Even as we sit here writing our history, the next generation is busy following in the footsteps of all those who came before them—learning the ropes from the ground up. But, more importantly, learning to redefine them in new and innovative ways.

Double Oak ages four years in freshly charred, new American oak barrels and then transferred to newly charred American oak barrels and aged to taste.

This experience was a precursor to my venture into the liquor shop business, where I had the privilege of curating an extensive collection of liquors, granting me access to thousands of unique bottles from across the globe. Exploring the Agave Fields of Oaxaca: While my career commenced with a focus on Scotch and Bourbon, life’s adventures have led me to the picturesque agave fields of Oaxaca, Mexico. As bourbon tradition mandates, it undergoes a four-year ageing process in brand-new, charred American oak barrels. The extended maturation period in these fresh charred barrels imparts a heightened spiced oakiness and caramel sweetness to the liquid. These experiences have honed my palate and provided me with a profound understanding of the vast world of spirits.

This bourbon begins life much like the classic Woodford Reserve but takes a unique turn during ageing. After its initial maturation, it undergoes a secondary ageing process in brand-new barrels, which are heavily toasted and lightly charred. Malva pudding, apricot jam, cream, dark cherries, candied fruits, caramel, honey with hints of cinnamon. Now, the moment of truth – the comparison! Tasting these two double oak releases side by side is an eye-opener. The Jim Beam is spicier than the Woodford Reserve with a drying wooden note. It is less complex and less sweet. Sweet on the palate, moderate mouth feel. Young notes arise once more, though. Malty grains, bitter oak notes, a bit of heat. This is a pretty darn good whiskey ( although I’m rather new to whiskey; only been drinking it a few months).. I just moved down to Florida from Massachusetts and the alcohol selection down here is absolutely pitiable ( the only place to buy any is Walgreens).True to its price. Wild Turkey 101 is my preferred bourbon. Jim Beam Double Oak is my second preferred now. Tried JD No.7 and Bulleit 95 too, but couldnt find peace with them. Pour a dram and leave it aside for a few minutes before you sip neat or perhaps add a drop of water. Brings out the character. In 2013, Fred Noe released Jim Beam ® Signature Craft 12-Year and Jim Beam ® Distiller’s Masterpiece—a re-release of his father’s small batch. Next, he unveiled Jim Beam ® Apple, the world’s best-selling flavored whiskey.* And finally, in 2016, Fred introduced Jim Beam ® Double Oak—bourbon aged a second time in a second newly charred oak barrel.

Jim Beam starts with a fermented mash containing 77% Corn, 13% Rye, and 10% Malted Barley. That’s more rye that usual for a bourbon, but half as much as Bulleit uses in their spirit. Nevertheless, it still has well over half the grains coming from corn and so meets the legal requirements there. Unpretentious and comfortable. It's beautifully smooth, easy on the palate with a warming gentle finish. All in all, the nose offers a lot of depth and enough spice to balance the creamy, mellow characteristics. Speaking of spice, I’m reminded of pink peppercorns, a few powdered cloves and nutmeg, all mingled in with a soft fruitiness that leans towards baked apple. Here, I’ve immersed myself in the art of crafting Mezcal, gaining a newfound appreciation for the craftsmanship that goes into distilling this ancient spirit. Once fermented and distilled, the spirit is added to new charred oak barrels where it sits for four years. Normally that would be the end of the process, but with this Double Oak variety the whiskey starts the aging process all over again in brand new charred oak barrels and another four year wait. You have probably seen the adverts for this featuring Mila Kunis which if you are a bloke and into women may have influenced your opinion on this already. If you aren’t then you might be indifferent towards it and just wondering if the juice is any good! Notably, there’s a substantial difference in price between them with the Jim Beam being more affordable. However, the Woodford Reserve bourbon reigns supreme when it comes to sheer indulgence.
