Description

This procedure is useful for Angraecums, Doritis or any similar plants and of course the relevant hybrids are especially easy to rescue. After this, place the keiki on the moist medium, gently pushing the roots deeper in. And that’s it, you’re done. From here on, keep an eye on the medium – it must stay slightly moist at all times. This is a delicate time for the keiki. Keep it in daylight, but always make sure it’s out of reach of heat. And remember to give it mild fertilizer. HOW TO MAKE A KEIKI WITHOUT KEIKI PASTE Use the product on plants up to three years old and young shoots, and even more so on newly transplanted “babies”. They have not yet developed a sufficiently developed root system capable of providing new shoots and peduncles with proper nutrition. Most likely, you will only achieve that the young orchid shed its leaves. Put it to stand or lay on moist moss, in a container of some kind. Then cover the whole container with Clingfilm, and puncture some air holes in it. Of course, you can. Most things can be done DIY if you know how it is done and has the motivation, resources, skills, and knowledge to do so.

If you still overdo it, and two or more shoots appear from one point of growth, leave only one of them (the one that seems to be the strongest and most developed). Otherwise, very soon the whole “structure” will dry out and fall away. A different way to propagate orchids would be through pollination. In nature, this happens through natural pollinators, whereas in cultivation, you must hand-pollinate the plants. There is nothing complicated in using Keiki paste. Even a novice florist will cope with the task. The main condition for a successful operation is the presence of peduncles on the orchid.

Use a dropper to transfer a few drops of 99% isopropyl alcohol to the BAP powder. The alcohol is added to dissolve the powder and for easy transfer. You may sprinkle BAP directly into lanolin but it may be hard to see if the powder is completely dissolved and if there are no lumps in the mixture. The key ingredient in keiki paste is a chemical called 6-benzylaminopurine, also known as benzyl adenine, 6-Benzyladenine, BAP or BA. For easy reference, I will call it BAP throughout this article. According to the American Chemical Society, BAP mimics the plant hormone cytokinin in eliciting plant growth by cell division, shoot multiplication and axillary bud proliferation. It also helps delay aging and keeps cut plants or vegetables fresh.

Take a small amount of your homemade Keiki Paste and apply it directly to the selected nodes or aerial roots using a clean brush or cotton swab. Gently brush or dab the paste onto the surface, ensuring good coverage. In one or two weeks the tiny bud should show signs of development. The time of development varies greatly because of growing conditions of the plant, genetics and a host of other variables. The speed of development depends on many characteristics of both the plant and the cultural conditions in which it is being grown. The following conditions have been found conducive to speedy and healthy keiki growth and development: It is mentioned that it might also work well for other plants such as Nephentes and Bonsais, where it is said to promote branch growth. Once the plant is divided, it can be easily repotted. It’s important to remove any dead roots or leaves. You should also remove old pseudobulbs. The new, smaller plants should be cared for in the same way that the old orchid was.Used on epiphytic (air plant) orchids like Phalaenopsis, Dendrobium, and Neofinetias, this synthetic hormone has the potential to trigger the growth of a baby orchid complete with shoots and roots—a rare but exciting event for any avid grower. Some people talking about the effects of Keiki Paste on the Internet mention that they see a bulking up, or at least something happening on the stem after just three days. To be honest, we couldn’t see anything: no growth points and no leaves emerging so far. Use a sharp, sanitized razor blade or scalpel to make a shallow cut in the stem. Remove the integumentary scales from the existing growth bud by prying it with a sterile needle and removing the remains with tweezers. A small light green bump will open. You need to act very carefully and without haste, it is very easy to damage the kidney.
