I LOVED this book, I love Mhairi McFarlane and I have read all her books now, she is one of my all time favourite authors and I always eagerly await anything new by her. This did not disappoint at all, once again her Characters are wonderful, people you would love to know yourself ( and def go to a pub quiz with), her clever, witty, insightful writing has such a depth of feeling that it leaves you wanting more from her straight away and it feels such a long long time to wait until her next book. There were entertaining humorous moments + exchanges between the friends & I was 100% here for mid-thirties MCs finding one another 🥰 That's not a particularly useful measure of your enemies, motive. If there's one thing I've learned, it's that harm done with explicit conscious intention of doing another person harm accounts for about two percent of all harm inflicted. That descriptor pretty much only applies to dictators in banana republics, serial killers, and PE teachers.” I'm honestly without any kind of words. I'm just feelings. I laughed, I cried, I did both some more, and mostly I just marveled at how good she is at creating complicated messes that don't feel like someone who is contriving to write about complicated messes. It feels like eavesdropping on real lives, people you sort've know, and are therefore invested in. No perfect specimens, no uncomplicated situations. Just real.

So would I recommend this? Absolutely! But don't come looking for a happy rom-com, and definitely bring some tissues! 🤗🤗🤗🤗 My Best Friend’s Wedding might’ve been a funny film but relieving its plot doesn’t feel funny in the slightest. Having the friend group meet while working in Waterstones was also such a nice touch, as a book lover.I want to write a very long review that truly lets people know how I feel about this but it’s late and honestly I don’t think I could put it into words anyway. I am a HUGE Mhairi McFarlane fan and so I am a bit gutted that this one didn't live up to my expectations.

I will never have a friend like her again. Not only because of our affinity, the sheer timescales. You can't make new old friends. Doors in your life, open and closing.” I didn’t even take the time to read the synopsis for Between Us when I saw it, trusting that bestselling author Mhairi McFarlane would deliver on a heartfelt romance with an edge. Somewhat unexpectedly, and despite what the cover may suggest, she doesn’t, exactly. That doesn’t make Between Us a bad book at all, just not one I was anticipating. This is what I never knew about loss—it’s also about what you gain. You carry a weight that you never had before. It’s never behind you. It’s alongside you. The only thing that bugged me was that most of the book revolves around the unhealthy relationship of the heroine, who finds herself deceived by the illusion of their love life, leaving little time for her second chance romance. Indeed, her blooming romance with another man after getting rid of her toxic ex is too instant for my liking. I enjoyed the side-plot that didn't villainize other women and went at things from a refreshing angle; though it did feel a little similar to McFarlane's last book, though in a quieter way. Which segues into another thing I was thinking of. I found MAD ABOUT YOU to be a louder book than usual from this author and while this wasn't on the same decibel scale, it still felt a little bigger. I think I miss the quieter books, the lower scale bits and bobs, though it's hard to properly describe that. There was just something very focused about McFarlane's previous books, big feelings in smaller social climates, less fireworks and drama on a stage, and I miss that. It was magic to me.So, to start off, the main character's name is pronounced "Rosheen" but is spelled: Roisin. I dunno, but I felt like I was stuttering in my head each time I came across this name! (Slowed things down a bit too, I must say.) McFarlane (Don’t You Forget About Me) brings a welcome dose of reality to the fake office romance trope with flawed, honest, but still endearing protagonists. After Laurie’s boyfriend of 18 Continue reading »

fast forward to four hours later when I have not even moved from the couch. I swear. No pee breaks, no food, nada. I love that feeling. Also I should've known better because not only is it me but it's also a McFarlane book. Before adding this book to my tbr-list, I was already familiar with this author, as I have read 'Don't You Forget About Me' (yes, the main reason I read that book was because of the title) about 3 years ago and I enjoyed it. But in this book's case, it was actually the synopsis that captured my interest and made me want to read it.after the hiccup with my first MM book and learning to go into her novels not expecting romance, this was a completely different experience, and one for the better.

Between Us: The biggest rom com of 2023: smart, romantic and

So, these books are not romance per se, but there is a romance that is the heart of the story and is HEAVILY EARNED!!! Maybe not everyone feels that way but I do! Also as someone that grew up with a core friend group and also still has a smaller version of the group with the same friends today (with lots of drama yay) you can imagine I find literally every aspect of her writing engaging and perfectly tailored for me. Mhairi McFarlane is probably my favorite women’s fiction author. Everything I’ve read from her is simply beautiful and keeps me up until the early morning (hence this review at 3am). I was struggling to find time to read this one with my final college semester starting but after midterms this week I just read as much as I could. McFarlane (Who’s That Girl?) strikes romantic comedy gold with this tale of reunited sweethearts who have to grapple with the past. During their last term of high school, popular Georgina Continue reading »So addictive that every thought went into our Group chat & not a single update made it to GR...I think I was too 😱 - I do not know when that last happened to me! It is a short (and fast?) conclusion but very very sweet and says everything that needs to be said.
