I had written my first children’s book years before I had children, and was about to have it published. The night before the contract was due, the owner of Halo Publishing called me at home. She encouraged me to write a book about autism because she could tell I wanted to create awareness and help others have a better understanding. When I explained that a story about autism was just an idea, and maybe would be the next book I wrote, she insisted that I do that book first. I hung up and felt like I had just gotten homework, but the next day started to write. For some of us who have raised autistic children, the belief we hold dearly is one that says, “a child with autism is just like any other child with a particular way of interacting with their environment.” Leah said that writing about family separation and bereavement was like "opening a wound again", but that it allowed her to tell her story more truthfully. She told us: "There's something I explore at the end of the book, about how we live these extraordinary lives. We're always challenging ourselves to be the best that we can be, but actually there's so much contentment in these lovely normalities of life, without this need to be striving to become famous. Sarah seeks encourages others to approach autism without fear or pity. We look through her lens as she depicts the everyday behavior of her brother Evans.Therefore I heartily recommend this book. It is a positive and uplifting book that can be read to any child to further their understanding about their sibling who has autism or indeed any other child who is on the spectrum.
