Description

The reason for this is that conventional flasher relays work by detecting how much current is being drawn by the indicator bulbs. Because LED bulbs draw far less current than conventional bulbs this confuses the flasher relay which may then flash at the wrong speed or not at all. Some people choose to fit load resistors to imitate the load of the incandescent (standard) bulbs that they have just removed. This results in more wiring, things may get hot and you are probably using more power than the standard bulb set up that you just replaced! Installing an LED flasher relay is the easiest way to solve the problem. This guide shows you how to bypass the built-in Piaggio indicator relay and fit a universal 2-pin indicator relay instead. So you've finally decided to swap out those bulky OE indicators for some sleek new LED units; maybe because you want something brighter to keep you safe out on the road, or you want to make your bike look its age and not older.

Quality European manufactured replacement 3 pin/connector indicator relay to fit all models. Like the original units it also has a hazard function for models with a switch fitted. If your Triumph has a 3 pin flasher relay, this should work with all types of indicators LED or original bulb type. When it comes to upgrading your current indicators to an LED set, simply plugging in the new units isn't quite enough (although fitting them properly doesn’t require you to be a neuroscientist). Fits all the Bonneville range carburettor models, Thruxton, T100, America, Speedmaster and Scrambler. Also fits EFI Bonneville range up to VIN 521668. Related products There are many flasher relays available that look the same as this one, and are described as ‘led compatible’ which will not work unless the current draw is around 0.5A. This is less than the 3.5A that a pair of 21W bulbs requires, but still way more than many led equivalents. This relay works with a current of 0.02A so it will still flash even with the tiniest of connected loads, including any led combination. PLEASE NOTE: We have seen many fake LED relays on the market. They look the same but have different components inside and the casing is made from an inferior plastic. We have even tested some where the positive and negative terminals were incorrectly labelled. Please ensure you have a suitable LED relay fitted to your Caterham when upgrading to any type of LED light. Suitable for many other classic or modern 12v cars or applications with standard filament / incandescent bulbs or LEDs or a mix of filament / incandescent bulbs and LED.

Plug and play, even for a Caterham novice I got my indicators working immediately, and it’s future proof for the (inevitable) upgrades to LED lamps. A great price, and very fast delivery from a company dedicated to Caterham. A big thumbs up from me, thank you! LED lights work using a lower wattage than normal bulbs, which is why when you plug them directly in to your existing indicator wiring you'll notice they flash a lot faster than normal and most probably a lot faster than the rate allowed for a UK MOT * This applies to EU and other bikes with hazards and 4 pin relays, type Mitsuba FR33-025 (however, if you show me the insides of a 2 pin I can advise as well)

Test your indicators for each resistor you fit to ensure that they are working correctly and to determine if any more are needed to further slow down the flash rate. This unit is also excellent with most LED indicators. Unlike the original incandescent bulbs, LED lamps are polarity sensitive so you may need to try swapping the connections to each indicator to get the indicators to work okay.

Resistors get hot during operation, so wrapping them in tape can lead to resistor over heating or worse melting plastic parts around it. These electronic relays will keep your flash rate constant and keep it standard even if the load on the circuit changes. Standard relays will not flash at the correct rate with LED bulbs. The red/white wires connect directly to the +12v positive connection on the battery after passing through the ignition switch and scooter main fuse so is a perfect place to take the power supply for our LED indicator. As with every modification to your motorcycle, if you are not confident undertaking the work it is always a better idea to take your motorcycle and the indicators to a qualified mechanic. Getting the right LED relay for your motorcycle in most cases just means pulling out your existing relay and buying an LED specific relay that matches the pin lay-out of your current relay. These electronic relays will keep your flash rate constant and keep it standard even if the load on the circuit changes.

Indicator/Flasher Relay 3 pin (Original and LED Indicators)

The voltage regulator/ flasher relay can be located in different places depending on which moped you have. On the Gilera Stalker used for this blog it is located behind the front fairing panel (behind the headlight). On a Piaggio Zip it is located behind the left hand rear panel (on the side of the seat). Looking to improve your flasher relay performance or are you considering or have you added LED indicator bulbs? More importantly this conversion also enables you to fit an LED indicator relay as the indicator relay built into the Piaggio voltage regulator will not flash properly with LED indicators fitted. One of the problems with this is you have to get the resistor value just right. If you fit just rear LED lights and get them flashing correctly you may need to change the resistors for different value ones if you then late additionally upgrade the front indicators. We have tested many LED relays on the market and we have found this one to be the best. Some LED relays will work perfectly with either rear LED lights or front LED lights but not both! No two Caterhams are the same and we have found that after extensive tests (with the help of our customers) that the our LED flasher relay will work every time at the correct flash speed. This relay has been specifically designed to handle any LED/standard bulb combination. Where other relays fail, this one does not. We have a 30-day return policy, which means you have 30 days after receiving your item to request a return.
