About this deal

We did build at a leisurely pace, but I estimate about 8-10 hours in total for seasoned LEGO builders. The sheer variety and incredible never-before-seen techniques employed will last with me a long time, and in many ways, it reminded me of building 10305 Lion Knight’s Castle (also co-designed by Mike Psiaki), but a more refined, and polished version. The one notable innovation that really elevates the look of The Hobbits are their new dual-moulded short legs, which really emphasise their bare feet. Oh, and paper capes also make a return, which feels right. Just like it was in 2013. I think printing this circlet is actually more successful than using a dedicated hair component, as the minifigure from 79006 The Council of Elrond does. However, exactly the same rubbery piece appears on Arwen and such repetition between the Elves is noticeable. A couple of alternatives should definitely have been produced for these minifigures, replicating Arwen's wavy hairstyle.

As normal, Rivendell is intended to be presented from the front, although the interior is also very detailed. I wonder whether an arrangement akin to 10305 Lion Knights' Castle would have been possible, so the model could be folded and enclosed on every side, or opened to create a wider facade. However, the rural features of Imladris require some separation from the focal building, so this design is probably more suitable. Had they made it a much larger, micro-scale build, I would probably be more compelled to buy it day 1."pieces filled with film magic – The set is an immersive project that’s bursting with details and references to The Lord of the Rings™ film trilogy that all fans will recognise The legendary shards of Narsil are displayed upstairs, presented beneath a statue of an Elven princess. Certain features of the original statue are absent at this scale. However, the hexagonal plinth seems reasonably accurate and I like the dark blue elements, intended to recreate a fabric sheet under the shards of Narsil. Peregrin Took is similarly attired in his finery, with a detailed scarf. All three minifigures feature traditional smiles, but also include second expressions chosen to reflect their personalities. Sam accordingly appears very serious and carries a frying pan, while Merry looks excited and Pippin is nervous. Naturally, the more troublesome Hobbits are laden with food, including Elven lembas bread. Ok, just kidding, but I want to say that 6000 parts for 500 € doesn't appear a good parts/price ratio this time, too many little cheap standard parts used for details. My children and I were (very very) fortunate to be given a private tour of the film set at Kaitoki (Upper Hutt, NZ) by Alan Lee when all the film equipment had been removed and just the set remained, prior to it being dismantled. Very little remains now, just an archway in the bush. To be able to wander around Rivendell and stand where the Hobbits and Elves did was extraordinary. I suspect 10316 will definitely become one of my treasured possessions. Real/reel Magic!"

The set was provided for review by LEGO. All opinions expressed are those of the author. Box and Contents For minifigures like Gandalf and Elrond with dresses/skirts, we also get these printed slopes so that they too can properly sit at the Council of the Ring. Ingenious and I’m glad the designers put so much thought into this. The third and largest section is the Council Ring, which also contains the larger portion of Elrond’s fancy home. LEGO have gone to town with introducing new weapon moulds, and you get an entire bag full of these awesome new weapons, all of which are made of pearl silver. You know, I can’t even remember if they show the entire tower at Minas Morgul in the film. Attention is largely focused on the city walls (which look like a sea urchin made sweet, sweet love to a fairly standard bear trap). I had to look up images of what the filming model looked like, but that tower terminates with a flared platform that looks like it has a siege tower perched on top. It sorta looks like one of the Easter Island Moai statues that has a hat. Talking about the set, LEGO Design Master, Mike Psiaki said, “We know many of our fans have been anticipating a set like this for a long-time – but a great LEGO The Lord of the Rings set is never late, it arrives precisely when it means to! It was important to us that we created something really special in this recreation of Rivendell." Working to balance my FOMO with my personal collection's saturation point - in terms of my own available display/storage space, the volume of high price point sets LEGO has been releasing, and the cost of trying to keep pace with all of that. Journey into Rivendell™ with this LEGO® The Lord of the Rings™ collectible (10316). Based on the Middle-earth™ valley where the famous quest began, this impressive 6,167-piece project for adults is bursting with details that film fans will adore.

LEGO 10316 The Lord of the Rings Rivendell review | Brickset

When displayed with the main building facing directly forwards, the depth is 38cm. However, you can angle the model for a minimum depth of 35cm, so it should fit on your bookcase. And here we are again. Lego release a new huge set and people will buy it brainless without even wait just a few weeks or maybe months.

The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell contains over 6000 pieces and occupies an enormous space on display, measuring 73cm across. The combination of muted dark tan and olive green colours with vibrant trees and roof tiles looks spectacular and I appreciate how different sections of the setting are angled, enhancing its realism. Of course, this configuration also increases the depth of the model. To have this many named minifigures in a set feels unprecedented, especially characters that are as sought-after as Lord of the Rings minifigures. Buying the older Fellowship of the Ring minifigures on the secondary market would cost you as much as the set itself. Detailed decor – Details include Frodo's bedroom and Elrond's study, and the different sections can be displayed separately: for example, the Council of Elrond™ can be lifted off the main model There’s also this fantastic new tree design making its debut here. It’s tall and narrow, and affixed to the building, but I love how vibrant it looks, as well as its sharp spear-like shape. I think much the same can also be said for some of the head prints. The original Legolas face may have been somewhat stylised but it worked and the use of several generic faces in this set feels like a cop-out. I understand that the old prints were out of production and they probably shaved a little off the costs by incorporating some parts already in production but it definitely feels like a missed opportunity.
