If you turn your head to look at something, does your child look around to see what you are looking at? Answer 16 Welcome to M’s world. It’s tipsy-turvy, sweet and sour, and the beast of anxiety lurks outside classrooms ready to pounce. M just wants to be like other teenagers her age who always know what to say and what to do. So why does it feel like she lives on a different plane of existence to everyone else? Statistics appear to show that more men and boys than women and girls have a diagnosis of autism. The study most quoted, written by Leo Kanner in 1943, found there were four times as many boys as girls. In later years various studies, together with anecdotal evidence, put the men to women ratio at anything from 2:1 to 16:1. Thank God awareness of Autism and Aspergers Syndrome in girls and women is spreading. For years it was believed that only makes were able to be on the Autism Spectrum, this has led to a tidal wave of diagnosis in females as it's recognised that traits can be very different between the two. Is your child interested in other children? ( For Example, does your child watch other children, smile at them, or go to them?)

If something new happens, does your child look at your face to see how you feel about it? ( For Example, if he or she hears a strange or funny noise, or sees a new toy, will he or she look at your face?) Answer 19 If you turn your head to look at something, does your child look around to see what you are looking at?Understanding and education are key to us all getting along and I think this book should be in every school library and all children, autistic or not, should be encouraged to read this book and it's sequel which I've not yet read but intend to. Because people think autism is something only boys have – and because girls with autism behave completely differently to boys – girls have to constantly mask their condition,” Warren added. “But having to pretend to be someone else is debilitating and humiliating. And it doesn’t even work: people can get annoyed with you even when you mask [because they sense your inauthenticity].” A very brief book (which I read cover to cover in 35 minutes) which gives a glimpse into the life of an autistic girl and how she copes with day to day life and the things which us NT people take for granted.

M is for Autism invites us into the world of a young woman with autism and allows us to view it through her lens. What an intriguing world we enter. This is a book to be read by everyone! --Professor Barry Carpenter, OBE, PhD, University of Worcester Avoiding childhood vaccinations can place your child and others in danger of catching and spreading serious diseases, including whooping cough (pertussis), measles or mumps. Risk factors Well done all. We need more books like this to promote understanding that we are all different in our own way and that is ok as it makes for an interesting world. How awful would it be if we were all the same? But Sarah Wild, head of Limpsfield Grange, believes there are just as many girls with autism as there are boys. Does your child understand when you tell him or her to do something? ( For Example, if you don't point, can your child understand “put the book on the chair” or “bring me the blanket”?)The struggle to get their condition recognised is just the start of the battle for girls with autism. Even when they are diagnosed, their life doesn’t necessarily get any easier: there is virtually no specialist support, academic or otherwise, for girls. Does your child look you in the eye when you are talking to him or her, playing with him or her, or dressing him or her? Does your child play pretend or make-believe? ( For Example, pretend to drink from an empty cup, pretend to talk on a phone, or pretend to feed a doll or stuffed animal?) Answer 3 Does your child play pretend or make-believe? I think it would appeal to both autistic teens and neuro typical teens as autistic teens will benefit from realising they are not alone in their anxieties and the NT teens will get an insight into just how hard life is for ASD teens. They might then gain a better understanding of the quiet geeky girl/boy in their class and know that it's not that they don't want to join in, but how hard it is for them. Inclusion is what we are aiming for. getting too close to other people, or getting very upset if someone touches or gets too close to you For Example, if he or she hears a strange or funny noise, or sees a new toy, will he or she look at your face?) Before that, on 8 November, there is a private House of Lords round table organised by the autism and girls forum – itself set up just 18 months ago. The Limpsfield girls certainly found their voice and it has all the urgency, immediacy and sheer vibrancy of teenage life... I hope that M's journey will help girls with autism making that same journey through their early teen years to find themselves and believe in themselves as well as help others understand and believe in them. -- Robert Pritchett, Director Autism Accreditation, The National Autistic SocietyThe score indicates medium risk. The writing of the book, was kind of meh. But it was also written from a 13 year old girl’s perspective, and perhaps maybe it was the translator. I am going to read it in english as well; I was told the style of writing was a lot better. Is fascinated by details of an object, such as the spinning wheels of a toy car, but doesn't understand the overall purpose or function of the object Has difficulty recognizing nonverbal cues, such as interpreting other people's facial expressions, body postures or tone of voice By telling M's story, the students of Limpsfield Grange School have told their own stories and have done everyone a valuable service. Not only have they provided awareness that autism doesn't just affect boys and helped readers get priceless insight into how autism works, but they have also helped parents and caregivers of kids with autism, like myself, be more aware of their own behaviors and provided those with autism with a book that just might help them understand more about this thing called autism that seems to take up so much of the space around and within them. M's counselor's messages to M about her value as a person being about so much more than her autism were something that all people should hear, and I'm incredibly grateful that I discovered this little gem of a book. Resists cuddling and holding, and seems to prefer playing alone, retreating into his or her own worldA novel told from the point of view of a teenage girl with autism, written by schoolgirls with autism, has been published after the students – frustrated by their experience of a world that rejects and ignores them – decided to take matters into their own hands.
